The local news reported that a man was killed in a traffic accident on Hwy 41 near Ave 15. It said that the 52 yr old man died when the motorcycle he was riding on smashed into the back of a truck (long pause) that had pulled out in front of him.

Pissed me off. They intentionally made it sound like it was the fault of the guy on the motorcycle. I can't remember all the times some idiot looks right at me and then pulls out knowing that I'll have to make some evasive maneuver or die. There used to be something called the right-of-way.

Bad stuff. About the only way to survive riding a motorcycle is to assume you NEVER have the right-of-way.

Just like Hughlysses says. I ride by that rule all the time. Mostly I just pretend I'm invisible. So when I'm pissed off at some cell phone talking jackass that has almost ran me over I flip em' the bird. They can't see me right?

You don't need to pretend you're invisible. For the most part you are.

The driver may see you in some way, but the brain filters it out because you're "not dangerous" (think cement truck) or "ignorable" (think garbage can on curb).

Fortunately, this filtering is subject to conditioning and education. For example, most drivers recognize pedestrians and act accordingly.

Drivers who use cell phones (or paint their nails in the car) should face stiff fines and/or jail.

I've stopped watching the news, it is all like that. They always start with something sensational, and only deep into the story is the truth.

+1
Eye contact will mislead you.

I don't even think that's it. Hardly a day goes by where I don't have to avoid hitting someone with my school bus. Seriously it's huge and YELLOW! This afternoon someone backed out of a driveway right in front of me looking right at me. Yesterday it was some lady crossing the double yellow to pass a moving truck. I made her back up. We aren't supposed to back up with students on board. We can just sit there till the cops come. Last week someone hit my stop sign that was sticking out from the side of the bus. It says STOP and has a pair of flashing red lights!

The other day a gal hit a huge motorhome, right in the side, that had run a rural stop sign. Just because she had the right of way she must have thought that he was going to stop.

We had a dinner party last weekend and the guys were asking me about riding. I told them that I just act like everyone is trying to hit me. They kind of laughed but I told them I was serious and that attitude has kept me alive for 30 years of riding.

I hate the creepers. Cars or trucks that are at a stop and than start creeping into the intersection more and more as I get closer.

when I see these asshats, I'll make sure I have room to move if they pull out in front of me. sometimes I'll really slow down but stay in front of them. other times if I have the chance I'll tell them at the next light how much of a move it is to creepout in front of a motorcycle.

I always check for vehicles at intersections. If I see a car there I keep a close eye on them expecting them to pull out because they "didn't see him".

when i was 16 and took the mfs course my instructor told me taught the class that bikes dont have a right of way, that they have to always assume that somebody is going to make a move that they shouldn't

of course the class knew that legally we had a right of way, but it was a very good lesson i thought!
