May 2nd, 2009, a motorcycle rider was killed while sitting at a stop light in Lake Zurich, Illinois when an automobile rear-ended her, she was thrown from her motorcycle and died instantly. The driver of the car told police that she was painting her fingernails and didn't see the motorcycle or the stop light when when the accident occurred. This last Saturday May 1st, they had a memorial ride down the same route that the accident occurred to raise awareness to the up-coming trial. I was at my lunch break at the McDonalds in Round Lake when the parade of motorcycles went by. There were over a hundred but I haven't seen a news article stating the actual number of motorcycles in the ride yet, but I will post it once it comes out. I felt it sent a pretty powerful statement with all the motorcycles that participated in the ride. I just wanted to share this website for everyone to look at. www.blacknailbrigade.org while I never new or met Anita Sue Zaffke, she was a true motorcycle rider and those are the kinds of people that I care most about as I get older. thanks don, i can relate to that. my daughter was hit from the rear while riding the m2l by a young girl who wasn't paying attention a few years ago. luckily she only got some scarring and road rash. | ||

update on this memorial ride I told you about. there were 500 motorcycles according to the newspaper. From talking to people that attended, they said there were 700 but anyway that was a nice showing. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=377644 | ||

Sadly enough I remember the post! Good to see a nice turn out. I actually drove past a downed bike today. Seemed the bike rear ended a car. Hopefully the rider is doing well. | ||

Jury deliberations begin in fatal 'nail polish' crash May 6, 2010 2:36 PM | No Comments After hearing two days of testimony, a Lake County jury must now decide if a Morris woman painting her nails while driving was criminally reckless when she struck and killed a motorcyclist at a red light. Hunt is on trial for reckless homicide in the death of Anita Zaffke in Lake Zurich on May 2, 2009. During his closing argument, the lawyer for Lora Hunt said Hunt has admitted that painting her nails while driving was a "stupid, stupid thing." But Jeff Tomczak argued that it was no different than eating a sandwich, talking on a cell phone or tending to a baby. "She was negligent, not reckless," Tomczak said. "She can't be found guilty." But Assistant State's Atty. Mike Mermel insisted that Hunt had acted recklessly. "It is not the same as biting a sandwich. . .it's a voluntary disablement," he said. "She might as well have been in the back seat making a sandwich." Tomczak argued that to find Hunt guilty, the jury must conclude that she willfully acted recklessly and knew that her actions would hurt someone. "You would have to decide that Mrs. Hunt got into that car and said, 'You know what, I don't care, I'm getting these nails done and I don't care if I hurt someone.'" Thats crazy!!! What happens to people who drink and drive and end up killing others? Under state of mind (iii), an "abandoned and malignant heart", the killing must result from defendant's conduct involving a reckless indifference to human life and a conscious disregard of an unreasonable risk of death or serious bodily injury. An example of this is a 2007 law in California where an individual could be convicted of third-degree murder if he or she kills another person while operating a motor vehicle while being under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or controlled substances. | ||

You wouldn't believe how often our school buses get rear ended. We have had two this week alone. Last week I had someone actually hit my stop arm as they went by, and they never even stopped! | ||

A motorcyclist who lost her life because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time and a driver of an automobile who thought it was more important to polish her fingernails that to drive responsibly. I find it sad that this country finds certain kinds of distracted driving (cell phone use, eating, etc.) "acceptable", but find painting your nails is negligent. What is this world coming to? I fully realize we've all done it, but it seems time for a wake up call. | ||

My neighbors friend was supposed to be on that ride but bailed that morning. He says he is always at the back of the group when he rides with them. I know that creeps him out. | ||

I know this does not help this woman, but I taught my kids to drive like I was taught to ride. Here in so cal when I lived in the LA area I was cutoff on an average of once a day, I mean with the drivers looking at you, looking does not mean seeing or the rest you can fill in. If not here is one for you, I had a coworker tell flat out that he hated motorcycles and if he saw one cutting lanes he would do whatever to cut them off. Also if first at the light , I keep my eyes on the mirrors just because, in gear tapping the brakes.until at least one car is behind me.Ride safe,take no chances.agatt richsm2 | ||

Richsm2, I've heard of others doing that tapping their brake lite while stopped but I never remember to try that. I might start now! But in this woman's case, I don't think it would have helped since the automobile driver didn't even see the red traffic light. It's scary out there on a motorcycle, but I'm not going to quit riding one because of it. | ||

Flashy stuff does attract attention. I sit with it in gear too, but I really don't want to have to make the choice of getting hit from behind or broadsided by the guy with the green light. | ||

Once had a guy run into the back while I was sitting at a light in Belgium. Wrote off his Mercedes. I was driving a fully freighted rig so I hardly felt it, scraped some of the paint off the under-run bumper on the semi, but no other damage. He said he fell asleep. Funny as hell, I felt a slight lurch & looked in the mirror but couldn't see anything, then I saw a car door open behind me & a guy stumble out scratching his head. Also got hit from behind on the Autobahn in Germany, some idiot pulled out in front of the truck in front of me so I had to brake hard & the Truck & trailer combo behind ran straight in the back. Sheared the cab of his Scania off it's mounts! Poor young guy driving was in tears, the wagon was only 3 weeks old. Took the Polizei nearly 2 hours to do all the paperwork though. | ||

I almost got cut off by an suv today in my mini, she pulled back into her lane just in time for me to avoid hitting the median. As i passed i noticed she was smoking with one hand and talking on a cell phone with the other. Impressive knee driving I thought just before I got pissed. Its time that people understand that if you are going to drive then drive. Dont eat a sandwich,paint nails, talk on your cell or do anything else for that matter. She needs to spend her time in jail to send a message to everyone else that this is unacceptable. You are responsible for your negligence. | ||

The other day I waiting on the oncoming car to use the green light he just got to get out of the intersection so I could make a left turn. I don't know if it was crack, hash, or herb but, the clown was firing it up no hands on the wheel and just barely creeping through the intersection. I think he was already toasted. | ||

RIP... I get really nervous anytime I am driving and I have to take my eyes off the road for even a second or two. Sometimes changing radio stations can be hazardous. Everyone does stuff when you drive but anytime you commit to a single activity instead of driving you run the risk of hurting someone else. That's when I pull over. If it's that critical, I pull to the side and deal with it. Being in the military I have driven all sorts of vehicles and done all kinds of tasks while driving... but there are significant differences. One being that traffic isn't present normally and the "TC" is always there to help watch the road or route if I have to do something else. No task is worth someone's life on the road...outisde of combat. | ||

So, I was sitting at a light one time, and I saw a big box truck in my rearview mirror coming up kinda fast, and bang, he hits me! He gets out and comes up saying "I really hit the wrong guy this time!" I tell him to pull into a parking lot and did a DOT inspection on the truck and put it out of service for having bad brakes. Of course his excuse was that they were taking the truck to the shop tomorrow, like that was going to help. There are so many operators out there that just keep trying to do things half assed. The other day a bus operator gave me a call saying he could not find a certain regulation concering a violation I wrote his bus up on. I told him that after 25 years of doing this I am just making things up as I go along, he was just incredulus, "Really? Really?" |
