Wasn't it a Progressive/Socialist who enacted the Dept. of Homeland Security that allows the Government to spy on anybody it wants to?

It don't matter who's in power, you are not safe. Of course, you wouldn't be safe if no one was in power, either. You need me to be in charge. Vote for me and I'll set you free! I promise to only serve one term in office. At the end of my four years there would be nothing left to steal.

Char,

"a PROGRESSIVE is not even the same thing as a SOCIALIST..."

In name only. Progressivism is merely the chosen means of achieving Socialism, progressively, little by little, one step at a time. "Progressives" are usually very careful to avoid ever uttering the word "socialism". They know most Americans abhor the idea, and rightfully so as history reveals time and time again. I'd say that if you are not a Socialist/Progressive, then maybe "Liberal" is a more accurate label. Of course there are different degrees of Socialism, the label covers a wide swath of folks who are supporters of "Social Justice" to varying degrees. But they would have to be more Socialist than free market libertarian in order to qualify. That's how I see this particular political ideological label anyway.

I'd much rather discuss issues. I do strongly believe that Socialism is evil in that it curtails freedom and prosperity far more than capitalism.

The News Week cover was interesting, "We're All Socialists Now!" Then a couple months later the editor was frantically lecturing other journalists against characterizing Obama as a "Socialist." LOL! They got all swept up in the euphoria of their political success but then discovered that "socialism" is still a very dirty word in America.

Did you see the speech by Bertha Lewis, ACORN CEO, to the Democratic Socialists of America?

quote:

Democratic Socialists of America

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly socialist presence in American communities and politics.

http://www.dsausa.org/about/index.html

Like our friends and allies in the feminist, labor, civil rights, religious,
and community organizing movements, many of us have been active in the Democratic Party. We work with
those movements to strengthen the party’s left wing, represented by the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

...we will continue to support progressives who have a real chance at
winning elections, which usually means left-wing Democrats.

Though none of these struggles were fought by young people alone, they all featured youth as
leaders in multi-generational progressive coalitions.

http://www.dsausa.org/pdf/widemsoc.pdf

DSA’s main task is to build grassroots, multi-racial, progressive coalitions.

DSA recognizes that some insurgent politicians representing labor, environmentalists, gays and lesbians, and communities of color may choose to run under Democratic auspices, as in the 1988 Jesse Jackson campaign, or operate as Democrats like Senator Paul Wellstone, and the 59 Democratic members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, one-half of whom are Black and Latino and all of whom possess strong labor backing and operative social democratic politics.

At the same time, we were pleased to have Democratic Congressperson and Progressive Caucus member Bob Filner of San Diego introduce Sanders at the convention, and note that Progressive Caucus member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) will be honored at our annual Debs-Thomas-Harrington dinner this Spring in Chicago.

We operate within progressive coalitions as an open socialist presence and bring to these movements an analysis and strategy which recognizes the fundamental need to democratize global corporate power.

DSA strives to be a crucial socialist leaven within a mass movement for social justice. In the 2000 elections, most electorally-active, progressive constituencies will endeavor to elect progressives to Congress and to the state legislatures.

http://www.dsausa.org/dl/sum2k/01.html

As young democratic socialists we are proud to have been part of the broad-based struggle to defeat Bush. That struggle, however, was not enough, and we now face the prospect of a demoralized progressive grassroots and a right-wing on the offensive.

The biggest lesson for progressive activists may be this: don't put all your eggs in the electoral basket.

The infrastructure that developed out of this progressive coalition along with independent groups like America Coming Together and the League of Pissed Off Voters must be sustained and expanded.

YDS affirms the possibilities of continuing and growing the progressive movement into the future.

YDS understands that these voters are the core from which we can grow a democratic and socially progressive majority.

Fighting for progressive social values is indispensable to the struggle for a more humane and egalitarian world.

http://www.dsausa.org/ydsupdate/2004/30nov2004.htm

Connecting the issues of the war abroad and the war at home, the National Youth & Student Peace Coalition (comprised of over a dozen national progressive youth and student organizations) has come together to promote the "Books Not Bombs" Agenda:

How can people on the Left hold the next administration accountable and work towards a progressive governing majority?

http://www.dsausa.org/LatestNews/2004/boston1.html

News from DSA:
A report from DSA's National Office

A Progressive New Year

We will work in coalition with our allies in the trade union, civil rights, peace, and community organizing movements. We believe that more than cheerleading is required if a progressive coalition is to be reborn that is capable of pressuring our elected representatives to enact policies that benefit the people rather than the clients of K street corporate lobbyists.

Bundle orders of Democratic Left are shipped free of charge to organized DSA groups and are available at very modest costs to other progressive organizations and for use in classrooms.

http://www.dsausa.org/NewsFromDSA/2006/30dec2006.h tm

An Obama presidency will not on its own force legislation facilitating single-payer health care
(at least at the federal level) or truly progressive taxation and major cuts in wasteful and
unneeded defense spending. But if DSA and other democratic forces can work in the fall
elections to increase the ranks of the Congressional Progressive and Black and Latino caucuses,
progressive legislation (backed by strong social movement mobilization) might well pass the
next Congress.

While recognizing the critical limitations of the Obama candidacy and the American political
system, DSA believes that the possible election of Senator Obama to the presidency in
November represents a potential opening for social and labor movements to generate the critical
political momentum necessary to implement a progressive political agenda. We know that a
proactive and progressive government can come only on the heels of a broad coalition for social
justice united against a reactionary Republicanism as well as a Democratic neoliberalism.

Thus, DSA offers its Economic Justice Agenda and its “four pillars” as a framework for such a
progressive policy agenda.

We need more progressives
in Congress as well as increased Democratic majorities.

http://www.dsausa.org/pdf/Statement_on_the_2008_Pr esidential_Election.pdf

The Socialist Party fights for progressive changes compatible with a socialist future. We support militant working class struggles and electoral action, independent of the capitalist controlled two-party system, to present socialist alternatives. We strive for democratic revolutions – radical and fundamental changes in the structure and quality of economic, political, and personal relations – to abolish the power now exercised by the few who control great wealth and the government.

The Dept. of Homeland Security allows the Government to spy on anybody it wants to?

Huh? Your tin foil hat may be loose.

But yeah, in some ways Bush 43 was a Socialist. In more ways though, he was a capitalist. He indeed did implement a massive social aid program, prescription drug coverage for medicare, but he at least left the industry in the hands of the free market to provide the products.

And he/congress didn't pay for it. Really DUMB!

Socialism sucks.

Actually, it's not Homeland Security that does the domestic spying, it's the National Security Agency. If you're not doing anything wrong, of course, you have nothing to worry about.

You can trust the government to protect you, treat you fairly and protect you from a salty foods and sugary, fattening softdrinks.

Rise up, stand up, yep, just do it down range, and I prefer you to be back lit.

remember if shiat does come to shove, the ones that depend on the government, wont be the ones making it to the other side.

Its not from each from their ability to every other based on their needs... Its every man for themselves and from what I need is 'them' to leave me the hell alone.

2012 will be interesting because you just know the shallow minds will try and create hysteria.
