OMG, I almost cried at the Combat Beard! Too funny!

I saw a special on the A-10's. Bad mofos, they are. Had an interview with the designer, and yep, the entire plane was designed AROUND that gun. Because of their slower speeds and super-wide wingspan, they can literally turn on a dime. That's actually their only protection against AA missiles... they spot them, then DODGE them!

Corrected quote:

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem."

as far as I know the A10 is limited to a 10 sec burst because it slows the plane down so much.

also I have reached in the back of one, there is a small hatch that opens back there. if you reach in you can touch the back of the gun!!

I have seen the pictures of an A10 riddled with holes and 1/4 of one wing missing a vertical stab nearly gone and an unexploded RPG in the other wing and the pilot brought it home and landed it safely.
now that is something to be feared!
around the cockpit it armor the front glass is super thick and also bullet proof

and these come out the front in such an array it sounds like a big rig grinding gears as it puts 1/2 inch holes every inch in a full speed pass

to peace ; )

As much as I love the A-10, the thing about the gun needing short bursts to not slow the plane down is a myth. : )

As for the original picture in this thread... I was proud to be in many of those cans wearing the same parachute harnesses and ready to be opened up anywhere in the world in 18 hours. The Airborne side of the Army is a much different Army than what most see. I am glad I was raised in there and not elsewhere. Makes transitions to other units a little disappointing but I always have FT Bragg to look back on as the "Good Old Days".

Froggy

that's a great article, I wish I had that when the weapons and ammo troops were yakking on about depleted uranium rounds and wing stalls.

I didn't get to play with the big gun I was mainly an avionics guy so everything I "know" about the gun is second hand and possible exaggeration.
