Long story short. Took a vacation this week. Just found out that my shop was broken into. They tried the house also.... Anyway..... I know that two sets of Tuber wheels went missing. One set of polished stockers and a set of PM Chicanes. Not sure of anything else other than a shit load of hand tools. They wanted the bikes, but..... NO DICE! I lock them up and cable them down. So...... if word is heard on a couple sets of wheels being sold via craiglist or ebay from arkansas let me know. | ||

Punched a screen out. Knocked a door knob off and then kicked the door in. Missing all my sockets! Took the box with them in it. When I say all my sockets..... I mean all three plus full sets of them. A compound miter saw. probably more missing than that. Won't know till I get home later this week. | ||

We decided to alarm our shop after too many stories like this. The savings in insurance helps a teeny bit but the piece of mind is amazing. We also have the screen alarmed so we CAN leave the screened window open in the summer and if it is cut, the alarm goes off. | ||

http://www.wilife.com/ A cheap but good, surveillance system. Really the only bad thing I've found is you have to have a computer on all the time. I have a one outside on the garage, a couple in windows looking out, and one in the garage with a motion light. Yea it wont stop anything from happening but its a piece of mind. It will send you an e-mail and a text message with a 10 second vid, i get the text within a minute of going in my yard. Pretty simple for me, text message...call the neighbor, and "Doegie" D.O.G. gets let out, (175# rottie) I know the feeling, It sucks... It takes a while to feel " AT HOME " again. | ||

There are few things more frustrating than that. Work hard for your stuff so those idiots don't have to. Unless you are a lot more organized than I am (and almost everybody is), you will be discovering things missing for a long time. I would go to grab some seldom used tool and get mad all over again. It's probably been 15 years, and now I'm mad again! | ||

That sucks. Hope they catch the big rancid turds. Lotsa good info on this thread. As far as learning from this (sorry), it's another eye opener. Unfortunately, this can happen any time, any place if someone wants your stuff enough. Since we live in hurricane-ville and can be blown away at any given moment six months during the year, we walk thru the house at least once a year and take video of the contents, improvements, etc. That way, if the CATEGORY 5 is heading our way, we grab the insurance papers, video, kid, critters, essentials and haul azz. I have been saving up to do a video set up that records to a hard drive in my gun safe. With battery back up! That is gonna happen sooner than I expected. It would take a pro to get into the house. The shop was another story. Not after this now. Already know what is gonna happen out there after I get back. From the looks of the pics sent to me.... This was not a pro job. Someone looking to make some quick cash for something else. They went thru all four tool boxes. Took the one they could carry off. On a hand truck(mine) that is. Emptied the big box into other more portable carry devices. They found some of the shop stuff up by the house. They tried to kick in a door. When the sheriff checked the inside.... He chuckled at that one. The door they chose is barred on the inside. All the other outside doors are security doors. Takes a key from the inside and outside to open when locked. All the windows on the backside of the house are barred also. So even if someone got inside.... everything would have to leave out a window! People that do this stuff make me sick. People who have no respect for others, their property or privacy. People who believe that others OWE them something for nothing. As a side note, I don't think it happened because I was on vacation. The day and time would indicate they had an idea of my work schedule. Back to the non pro statement. Some of the stuff they tried to take. Like a bundle of shop rags? A •••••• belt sander from HF. A beat up 5' air hose. Stuff they skipped over, like a chainsaw they had to step over? My chop saw, mig welder, powered trimmer and extra attachments. | ||

That sucks. Be sure to canvass the neighbors (and maybe even the press/local paper?) to find out if anyone saw ANYthing - an out of place car, a "guy walking around looking weird" - and given the apparent schedule awareness, have them think back a month or more. Somebody cased the place long enough to realize that whatever-auto wasn't in the driveway, or XYZ porchlight wasn't on, or something. Inventory will suck, but insurance should replace all the stuff you need for you if you have good coverage. We're going through the same thing in our basement (flooded in March) - and we're learning that we had a LOT of stuff that we just don't need to replace....allowing us to upgrade a lot of the stuff we are going to replace. The good news? Nobody was home. Nobody got hurt. Stuff....is just stuff. | ||

Every tool I own has been engraved. That cheap engraver has more than paid for itself. It won't keep it from getting stolen but will be much easier to identify. I even engraved all four casters on the bottom of my rolling tool box. Sucks to hear about the break in, hope you catch them. | ||

Notify the local authorities of what is missing and check back every week for a while. If it is a local meth-head and they get busted you might get it back if you hound them a bit. I lost a bunch of stuff this way several years back, the thief got arrested on drug charges and they took all of his stuff(which included my stuff). I was waiting to hear back from the sheriff's department, but never did. I called back several months later to see if anything had showed up. They read my serial numbers of my chainsaw and some other stuff saying it was no longer held in evidence. That was presumed to mean they released it to the defendant or a public auction, or a deputy needed it for some work at home. That is also how a deputy in St Petersburg Florida ended up legally stealing my 6'x 12'enclosed trailer that was stolen from me months earlier. He did a quick claim title from local judge before I could get there to pick it up, when he knew I was on my way to get it. The Prick!  | ||

My uncle is a contractor and keeps most of his equipment at his home and some of the big stuff at a warehouse. Business was good so we threw a huge barbecue for everyone involved in the business. This included suppliers we bought from and people we subbed work out too. Conveniently someone took this opportunity to check the security measures and rob the place a few days later. Nothing says thanks like robbing the person that invited you to their home for a free night of food, drinks and entertainment. Nothing makes me more sick than thieves. Side note: We had a bowling banquet a few days ago and someone tried to pocket 20 bucks from a community fund. I saw his thieving ass and it turned into an altercation. I didn't throw the first punch but I threw the last. Several people had the attitude that it wasn't worth the trouble "I" started. (He got 6 stitches over the eye.) It was only 20 bucks I should have just let it go they said. I feel stealing is stealing either way. I guess I am just out of the current moral compass. I am the idiot who still gives it back when someone drops their wallet or ipod and I chase them down to return it. I lost my wallet and someone emptied it of all the cash and threw it in a mailbox. Sleep well at night knowing that you live your life with integrity and the willingness to work hard for the things you want and that thieves are useless people who truly feel empty inside for not standing up and providing themselves and their families with what they need through hard work and determination. Well the shop is now super secured. A real determined individual could still get in, but it will take time and power tools. Got the list faxed off to SF last week. They nearly took all the shiny aluminum stuff. Looking at just what did leave and what was found near the house.... Definately a doper looking for quick coin. Sad to say the aluminum parts will never be recovered. Making the leap to figure that they got smashed up and turned in for scrap. Something happened the other day when I was mowing the grass out front. A small beat up white car drove by slower than the norm. I think the driver was glaring at me. I think the perp hurt himself when he tried to kick in the door. Left a boot print on the steel door. Right at the level of the interior bar on it. More than likely set him on his azz real quick. probably the reason for the spilled tool tote close by. Back to the car.... similar car has been sighted near a few other breakins in the last couple months. | ||

as for an inside job. Not a chance only a handful of real close friends knew what was in there. They do not talk about who has what and where. |
