I need to make a copy of that list. I work for a small insurance company owned by a very large one. Yes, you're recognize the name. We've spend many hundred man hours documenting our systems and work load for the last year. Some of the development work has already been shipped to India and we have 3 contractors working on site. There has already had one round of layoffs and rumors swirl through the office. Worse yet, if I do get laid off, I don't have a motorcycle to ride!! |

You have to give Spiderman credit, he does live in the state with the highest unemployment rate, downtown Detroit is in worse condition than a third world country(see the beginning of the movie Borak, only the people that are left in the city are not as happy and carefree as the people in the movie)and he is probably trapped by a mortagage that is probably depreciated 70%. And you ask me why he does this? He is standing ever vigilant protecting our Northern Borders from the blood thirsty Canadians! If it wasn't for Spiderman we wouldn't have Strohs beer or Strohs icecream, we would be forced to drink Labatts(all good things come from the Lord, except Labatts, that comes from Canada)We would be forced to listen to the constant drivel from some idiotic Canadian woman saying stuff like "Ya know, my husband smoked mirajuana once, he he had to lock himself in the basement to keep from killing me, Eh?" Spiderman did a good job at protecing us from the horrible Canadians, BUT, he must have become overwhelmed at the task at one time as he allowed for a Canadian to be elected governor of this once fine state, though her Canadian citizenship was not discovered until after the election. This Canadian governor promised to "Blow us away", not Blow you Spiderman, though she has been known to say "Bite Me" at times. What we need to do is begin a Free Spiderman campaign to raise money so he can move to somewhere that he can find meaningful employment and leave this vast wasteland behind. P.S. I won my first case ever in court yesterday, I showed up on my own behalf, I thoroughly pissed off the judge by inturrupting him not once but twice, but he still dismissed the ex's motion. It is somewhat hollow as I was not awarded compensation for my time to file a response and time from work. |

Mine is close to that but I have a few more items: Complete homework. File for weekly unemployment check. Register for at least one summer class to continue unemployment during the summer. Go for a ride. |

Close, Froggy...close. Forgot: 9. File for biweekly unemployment benefits (gotta pay for the internet service!) 10. Work on "honey-do" list (no excuses now...) 11. Ride and work on the Buells as much as possible - because you can! 12. Go to a company on a lark because you hear they're looking for salespeople - unprepared, NOT dressed for business (out riding, actually - including a rather spectacular case of helmet-head), NOT shaved...and 3.5 hours later leave with a job offer. DAMMIT. Now I have to start getting up in the morning again lol. But income is income, and as long as we have a mortgage I guess I'll have to keep working. Anybody need an RV? I start May 1.... Just goes to show, though - want-ads are worthless. Networking is where it's at. Get an inside line somewhere and go for it. Nevrenuf - depending on your state's rules, you may qualify for training courses. If you're already a draftsman...get some CAD experience if you don't have it already. CAD is waaay popular around here and if you can work the program, you can work in just about any industry. Hell, I looked into a concert production gig and *they* wanted CAD experience! And Spidey - don't forget, I'll bring a case (or more) of Yuengling to HC for ya. Just make sure they don't run out of Spotted Cow in the meantime And keep those borders safe! |

although the daughters fiance got to do that when he got laid off from manitowoc crane, i didn't even think of that. i went to school for primarily autocadd back in 90 but never really got into it until a few years back. and right now i have some 3-d background but without additional software knowledge, my career can be put on indefinite hold depending on who's using what out there. and since i have 40% disability, i'm restarting the vocational rehab avenue with the va while i'm laid off. looks like things are picking up in the business but who really knows. i will check into the unemployment thing though. thanks. |

if you can work the program, you can work in just about any industry Not really. I am a tool/mold designer. I have extensive 3D cad/cam experience. Without a degree, the jobs that actually pay well really aren't there. Trust me, I was looking today, since I was close to joining Spidey. But I found a new job within 4 hours of looking. Unfortunately, it's not the cushy office drawing 'purdy 3D pictures all day. My commute has now gone from 17 miles both ways, to about 50. And it's night shift. But it'll pay the bills till something else comes along. |

at least you were able to go back to work steve. if i want to stay in this field, it might be a long wait. one friend finally found a job out in nebraska after being out well over a year. my brother in law hasn't worked since labor day and that was just a 6 week job. the job i just got let go i had a 50 mile round trip and rode just about every day. saved a ton on gas money. and right now even if i took a pds course, without the actual experience, i'm still dead in the water. i just hope that people realize that bentley is more user friendly. i can only keep my fingers crossed at this point. |

Wow Steve, I thought your situation was more secure than that, sorry to hear. My current CAD contract ends in less than 12 weeks and I've had zero response from recent searches. It's not just CAD that one needs these days for drafting or design positions, you need the specific CAD program the company is using. Transferability of skills seems to be unacceptable, and "fast learner" does not seem to compute either. And it really sucks because my recent primary CAD tool is I-DEAS and most firms locally seem to want Pro-E, Solidworks, and AutoCAD. Come July I'll probably be working on bicycles and mowing lawns to partially survive. My 45mile each way commute is no big deal as long as I'm working, and I've been sending out aps up to 150 miles away. I'm in craigslist purge mode trying to sell stuff off for living/relocation expenses. Speaking of which, you need another item on the daily To Do list above: Hit thrift shops and rummage sales for stuff to resell on craigslist or ebay to generate gas/food/beverage money. Sorry for the whine, I'll bring cheese next time. |

As an experienced truck driver & qualified motor engineer, I've never had to worry about being unemployed. My thoughts are with all of you who are looking for a job. Oh I've done it myself often enough, but never been out of work more than a week or so. Just got to keep knocking on the doors til one opens. |

Yeah, I count my blessings that I was only out of work for a month (technically not working for 2...but that's my choice because of all the crap I need to get done). Something will pop up. It always does. Patience and an open mind is all it takes |
