That wasn't the first.
It was built by Sylvester Howard Roper of Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1867.

the other said it was a production motorrad glitch. was this one a production bike.

Roper died of a heart attack while riding the last one and THEN crashed!
I love me some Sylvester Roper.
