Car slowing ahead, car in front of me stopping, I'm stopping...guy behind me is not... I'm ok. We are still mobile. Shaken not stirred. Her cousin's wedding is tomorrow, were 400+ miles from home, and I get rear-ended driving her car, visiting my 98 year old Grandmother for 2 hours. WTF? My neck is sore, my laptop (which is an older 12" G4, slow but sweet) is folded in half--sideways--like a letter "V". It was in the trunk. The civic IMHO is totaled. He hit me 35mph to the rear. Uni-body up to the gas tank is crumpled. Other guy had insurance, so, maybe not a total loss, but still a dang hassle. Thanks for listening. Hex | ||

Sorry to hear that mate. If the rear crumple zone is deformed (very probable) it'll be a write off as it's integral to the body shell. But that's what it's for, so it's done what it's supposed to do which is protect you & reduce the impact. Best of luck. | ||

GET checked out by a doctor NOW. DON'T sign anything and DON'T cash any check they might send you without understanging that it you do they are free and clear of doinf anything else for you. Second glad you're OK and weren't on your bike as you might not be posting now...or ever again. Be careful of the adjuster, I had pretty much the same thing happen to my 8 month old Civic. $13,000 damage with the THREE MONTH RENTAL car they had to get me and they would NOT total it. If they'd known I was planning to sue for lost value they might have done so as I tried to trade the car in after it was "fixed" and was told "As it had so much damage it wasn't worth much" And they offered $3000.00 trade in. Hope you're OK Hex. Been through that a couple of times. Once I woke up the next morning unable to move my neck. Took a couple of weeks to feel good again. I felt good the day of the accident though. That accident had a group right in front of me with a trunk full of wedding gifts they were taking home for the happy couple. Hope there was nothing fragile! Don't jump at the insurance companies first offer. Make sure you are OK before you do anything. They want to to sign off on being compensated ASAP. Don't let them pressure you. | ||

Glad you are ok... but do go to a doctor immediately and document everything... get the police report... hire a lawyer... this stuff can come back to haunt you years later... | ||

Thanks all, Kathleen wants me to say that the sad part is that she just spent $1200 on the timing belt/100,000 mile tune-up, and she only has two payments left to make. Even though we are fervent socialists, we never had an Obama sticker on the car, we were too worried about vandalism and malicious mischief in our Right Wing haven of Northern California.  Doerman, thanks for the offer, but we should be fine, the car is still drivable. | ||

I would certainly see a doctor. Document your expenses and losses. Insurance should cover all of that. I'm not clear on the advise to see a lawyer at this point. They will do nothing you can't do yourself to recover documented damages, and unless you are seriously hurt then it's little more than a bogus lawsuit. | ||

I bought a used car from a dealer once,.. the tires looked ok to me. 1 week later, in bumper to bumper traffic, I had to hit my brakes and they locked up. Older tires do not stop as good as new ones. I slid about 5ft too far and into the truck in front of me at about 10-15 mph. The car was drivable and I went to a firestone to check the car and (I also thought I had antilock brakes). They said the tires were definitely too worn to be sold on a vehicle. I could have taken them to court but it would have taken years of fighting a dealership. I let my collision ins pay for it. Not saying it wasn't my fault but ... just that the tires can be an overlooked contributor to freak accidents like that. |
