Going to see some tonite, with "The King of Country Western Troubadors", The Unknown Hinson! Saw them last year, one of the tightest 3 piece bands evaaar! Gonna be a good day- and nite!
Gonna pump some local buddies today- youn's go look up The Drunk Uncles soon- peeps in the band are longtime musicians who formed a new band, doing some good stuff.
Been busy working hard to teach the noobs to ride in this be-yoo-tee-full Florida sunshine, so have not had much time to play on badweb. Back now, and decided this thread needed a little chill music. One of my favorite obscure chill cd's is by an anything but obscure band. Most people have no clue what a talented group of musicians this NYC band is. BEASTIE BOYS member Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer last year, hoping he makes a full recovery and sticks around for a long time, I'd love to catch them live some day. Anyone here ever seen them perform?
Here's a few tracks from one of my favorite CD's ever. THE BEASTIE BOYS' Instrumental "In Sound From Way Out"
Whazzup Flgirl- yeppers, it was a great show, got to see a whole lotta folks I'd not seen since I left the dealership- friends, former coworkers, my old boss Scott M., the usual band of heathen. Even got some killer ribs to go with the PBR tallboys. Had to behave, though, had my GF with me- having been an original employee there, too many peeps talking to me takes away from the time I should be spending with her... DAMHIK.
Speaking of obscure music- I've been reading the May issues of CW and Motorcyclist- Brian Catterson did a page on "Ducati All Stars", made mention that "until ZZTop performs as the Harley-Davidson All Stars, Ducati is the only brand with a house band."
Having read the stories in both issues about the death of Buell Motor Company, I'm gonna have to email him and let him know about Erik Buell and the Thunderbolts- better yet, since I've not actually seen/heard the band play live, I should start a new thread... someone here should be able to post footage of a past performance!
This singer-songwriter chick has a unique voice and unexpectedly scathing lyrics. I love the tone of her voice and the first video here is one of my favorites from the mid-80's. Check out the hair.
Love to pop in one of her CD's and sing along in the car.
From the great state of Virginia via California, Here's AIMEE MANN.
OK, I'll stick with female solo artists. She was a member of Lone Justice in the 80's and has a successful solo career since her marriage. Such a sweet voice. This is MARIA McKEE.
OK, I'll bite- but first, pardon my repost: youn's gotta go look for Ana Popovic. She played a few years ago at the Shed, with a great backing band- I've NEVER seen a woman play electric guitar like she did, and rarely a guy who could match her chops. (and that's after she walks on stage, she's VERY fun to look at. ) Absolutely jaw-dropping virtuosity, and a clear expression of her personality through her playing. I'd LOVE to see her again.
Casting back to my growing-up in Nashville, a longtime player in Nashville is Jonell Mosser and Enough Rope. Seen her many times, always a great show, the woman sings a little like Janis Joplin. IIRC, she still plays regular gigs around town, but it's been over 20 years since I've seen her.
86129-I'll definitely keep Ana Popovic on my musical radar. An awesome voice is great, but its still too rare that you find a female musician that writes, sings and plays her own stuff. Too much "pre-packaged" stuff out there, especially in the mainstream realm.
Must be Friday, feeling a little funky. Here's a band that had some local and regional success in the mid-90s. From Raleigh, NC, Here's DAG
S3ters-I remember that guadacanal stuff. Hard to believe that was that long ago. Damn, I'm getting old but still don't feel a day over 14!
Like this guys music alot, hear he's coming to O-town. Gotta JOHN HIATT freebie from one of our former fav record store clerks ("y'all like this kinda music, here, take this) about a million years ago and loved it. Hope the schedules work out so we can see him live.
I've worked for Hiatt. Treats his people well. Even though he's a star he never let his head/ego get to big, kinda like Jimmy Buffet in that regard.Maybe Ry Cooder later.
I'll post tues. selection today. They never made it mainstream but were very popular on the alternative charts so don't know if I'm reaching posting them on a obscure music thread but I liked em and maybe some of the younger gen might enjoy. This 80's heavy metal UK band was originally known as Southern Death Cult but we here know them as THE CULT.
The Cult was great. The drummer from Big Country worked with them as a session drummer on their Electric album. Big Country never made it quite as big after their debut, but they still kicked ass in Europe all the way until 2001 when the lead singer/guitarist was found dead in Hawaii. Ugh, I'll never figure out how to embed or post pictures on this site, cripes!
