My truck is getting too old to be considered reliable. My job has me commuting long distances, and this thing keeps giving me trouble. I'm 6'3", need four wheel drive, and the ability to tow a small trailer now and then. I also prefer to buy American. What do you think? |

Thats what I have now. 2004, 160,000 miles. Great truck until it gets old. I'm spending way to much for parts and repairs. |

Ford, or Toyota. I'm not sure where Nissan's are made, and IMHO Honda's are overpriced. ( good, but overpriced ) You might be able to get a real good deal on a Dodge Pickup. The locking storage in the bed fenders is such a good idea, I can't believe no one offered them before. ( and the flash animation on the web site showing it is cool ) http://www.dodge.com/en/2010/ram_1500/storage/exte rior/ I'm a long time Dodge Van guy. Chevys always seemed tin box cheap to me, Dodge's tough and easy to work on, Fords ok but prone to front end problems. On the old "Chips" show, the bad guys had beards & vans. Since I had both, and black friends, so add "salt & pepper team" to the mix, ( Though the beard alone qualified ) I had a rolling cliche for years. ( the van thing made sense, hard to steal a console TV ( remember those?) with a Beetle ) Also when the jumped a Van Dodges kept going, Fords died on the spot. ( and the General Lee was self healing and had an ever upshifting trans, so that's how accurate tv is...) Now I've got a '99 Ford Van, ( Dodge quit making them ) and its well made, except for the front end problems...... What do you have now? Need a pickup or suv? |

Nissans are made in my back yard. Buy one and support my local economy! |

Nissans may be made here, but still not an American company if you ask me. I prefer a pickup, an S.U.V. may work if I get a trailer. I could be convinced to buy foreign if it's a great deal. |

If a long commute like me perhaps just keep the old pig pickup and get a little commute-o-mobile. I did that. I have a 1990 Toyota 4X4 pickup and a 2007 Honda Fit. I am 6'3" BTW. It was the smallest car I could fit inside |

Do you need a F150 size vehicle? If not, what about a Chevy Coloado/GMC Canyon/Hummer H3T or the Ford Ranger or that Dodge thing? Oh and get a Blast for commuting, they crash better in the snow than the Uly (Message edited by froggy on April 02, 2010) |

Froggy, you make me wish I had kept my Blast, if only for winter amusement! |

My Uly only sustained cosmetic damage in my snow commuting "adventures". A Hummer? Too rich for a poor boy like me. |

Its a little bigger than the S10, its classified as a mid size while the S10 was a compact pickup. The Colorado/Canyon have 4, 5, and 8 cylinder models. I would have one, but you can't get the V8 with a stick! |

Landrover Defender 130 hi-cap with crew cab. Run forever, go anywhere, & draws admiring looks wherever you go. Whether they're available in the US these days I have no idea. |

I had been a Chevy guy since Zora Arkas Duntov came down from the mountain with the blueprints for the smallblock. A friend who can destroy a brick in a rubber room has a Silverado with 200k+ on it without serious problems...but it is older. I have no idea how the build quality is right now. I have a Ford Ranger...it may be too cramped for a tall guy, but at least give it a look. Well built, and stone reliable so far... As much as I love Jeeps, they have a horrible reliability record (new ones) and rank damn near dead last. I wouldn't get one unless it was at or below cost and it came with a lifetime warranty. Great fun vehicle...but too many issues. Whatever you buy...get the super mega warranty....nothing built today is bullet proof...and out of warranty repairs can be horribly expensive. I sell air conditioners and have a line on my sales contracts for customers who opt out on the extended warranty that says "I have been informed of the need for an extended warranty and have decided not to invest in one". |

Depending on what size you need (and we're a Mopar family)... I love our Cummins Ram 2500. Quad cab with the back seat removed (more tool storage, inside out of the weather), 8' bed, 4x4, auto trans, 21mpg, 16,000 lb bumper tow rating (and it'll do a big smoky burnout pulling a car trailer). 65k miles, bought new, the only thing we've had to do to it is put tires on at 62k. Oil changes every 5k, just like the bikes, tire rotation every other oil change. Period. If smaller works, my wife loves her '03 Liberty limited. Bought it used with 90k on it, heated leather interior, moonroof, great 4x4 system, small and maneuverable. I also love my '92 YJ Wrangler (155k miles). Again, back seat removed (bigger trunk), I stripped the interior and had it line-x'd, goes anywhere, does anything I ask it to - it's a 4 wheel Ulysses! I've also owned in the past a ZJ 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited. Pass anything but a gas station, but again - AWESOME 4x4 system, totally transparent and go-anywhere. If I had to buy new, though...as much as I love the new Ram, I'd have to go with a diesel Sprinter van. Mercedes diesel, awesome fuel mileage, hi-roof option that even I can stand in - basically an 'indoor pickup'. Only catch is, I don't think they have 4x4.... The old standby, though - an early 12v Cummins Ram. The 12v doesn't have the 610 lb-ft of torque the later trucks have...but they are a little better on fuel mileage. |

Rat, the next US vehicle on my shopping list is a 92/93 W250/Ram2500 ext cab with a Cummins. Probably be hunting for one late this year or early next. & yes, the Sprinter is a cracking vehicle. If you don't need the load capacity consider a diesel Merc' Vito though if you can lay hold of one. All the practicality of a van but goes & drives like a car. |

I'll put my vote in for a Ford. Either an F-150 or a V-8 Explorer. Both tow extremely well and are well made. I've owned three Explorers and an F-150. Had great luck with them all. I got bit by the diesel bug, and I LOVE my diesel. I had a Jeep Liberty turbo diesel and sold it to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee turbo diesel. I get 26mpg highway and 21 city and can tow 7500lbs with ease. 444ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels from a 3.0L six cylinder (I've had the ECU program slightly modified...LOL!) The downside is that it's a Mercedes engine and transmission, so when it needs work I'm going to have to bend over and grab my ankles for the butt reaming I'm gonna take. If I were going to buy today, I'd probably get an F-150 Crew Cab short bed with the 5.4L V8. Keep in mind Ford DID NOT take any bailout money during the last round of hand outs. Reward them with your business. |
