Got my (03 XB9S 11k miles) out last night, rode out of my development, turned onto the main road, shifted into second and was introduced to the most horrifying grinding noise I have ever heard. It shifted into second, and accelerated, but it sounded like I was stuck in between gears. I was able to use first and second gear to limp it home but the grinding noise was coming from the primary the whole time. I can see my whole paycheck going to the service dept at the Harley dealer. If anyone has experienced this already I would love to hear about it. And if this needs to be moved to the Technical area, feel free to do so.

Broken chain tensioner? Have you cracked the primary open yet?

No, I didn't, I maintain the bike myself but I am a little nervous about doing that. I suppose that is the only way to find out though.

Get a service manual if you don't already have one. The primary case seems intimidating until you actually get it open, then it's all right there in front of you. Very straightforward. My first bet would be that tensioner as well.

Make sure you drain it first or you'll make a mess. Good luck.

Opening the primary is scary at first, but it is no big deal. Get a service manual and you are all set.
