I've got a 16" Rock River LAR-8, and it is plenty accurate for that distance. They guarantee 1.5" at 100yds with quality ammo, and I can do better than that with handloads. Who makes the upper? What scope? |

I was looking at a bull barrel bolt gun in .308 earlier today. I was trying to find some .45 long colt ammo. I had to settle for Hornady 454 CASULL 300 gr. JHP/XTP/MAG. Not fun to shoot. Bruises the bone between the first and second joint of my middle finger. Expensive ammo for target shooting. That .223 cost a whole lot more now than when I use to shoot it. |

its not a Rock River, neither of them are. never said it was, i stated the new upper was all DPMS, the older one I believe is an Olympic/Olympia...w/e it was a turd w/ a 1:12" twist. New DPMS is 1:8"! Cavalry Arms 1-piece lower. |

I like coke cans, used, filled with water. 5 cent targets, and if you miss the bar code..... Very nice uber-plinker. ( and perfect for a prairie dog or chuck or.... well, Rodent hunting ) |

Looks like someone want to get accurate! Good call, looks nice. Break it in gently! Did you get the complete upper with a bolt and carrier for that upper? The AR platform i believe as versatile as it gets. It is a lot of fun to have multiple uppers just make sure you have separate bolt/carrier assemblies, you can and WILL cause damage swapping the bolt back and forth. Dont make the same mistake I have made. ENJOY!! |

In the process of building one of those myself. Using a CMMG lower and will be picking up a DPMS upper as soon as I can. Going for 20-22". |

Wait! Less twist ratio is better? I thought that the faster the projectile was spinning, the better. Or am I inverting the ratio in my head? |

FBDO: It's a steal at that price...MSRP is $57K... Trouble is, my $500 (in 1994) 11-87 breaks targets just as hard. rt |

oooooh... i want a scar! they are $2400 now around my neck of the woods the faster twist rate (1-7 or 1-8) is needed to stabilize the heavier projectile types like 75 or 77 grain in the .223 caliber. which makes it more of a long range gun. a slower twist like 1-9 or 1-10 is good for varmint weights like 50 grain etc. but they say a 1-9 is ok up to 69 grain or so |

Twist rate also works with muzzle velocity. Higher muzzle velocity gives faster spin with the same twist. Spin a hollow point bullet too fast and it can start to open up on the way to the target. It gets a bit more complicated than simply more/less being better. |

I look at it this way 1:8" with a 24" barrel = 3 rotations before exiting the muzzel. old one was 1:12"/20" so that 1 3/4 rotations before exit. bigger bullet needs more time with the training wheels sorta thing. |

69gr in a 1:9" is pushing it. thats THE MAX you wanna go. 1:8" loves a 69gr all day long. |

sifo, please explain how a higher velocity will make the same twist spin faster?? as i understand one revolution in seven inches will always be one revolution in seven inches.regardless of the speed of travel edit.. (never mind i thought about it some more sifo i see what youre sayin) and yeah, 69gr in 1-9 is the top end. my dcm gun is 1-8 and i shoot 69's in matches with that. ferris, interesting lower. i thought it looked one piece. some sort of plastic/resin. not to expensive either. found it for $159 so 1-8 is pretty fast for varmints, this your zombie gun? (Message edited by nuke-blue on April 07, 2010) |

Oh of course I had the ratio inverted. The way I was thinking of it, it would have been like pipe threads! |

we dont have p-dogs in Florida, armadillos, jehovahs witnesses, possums, rabbits, neighbors dog, ferrel cats, raccoons, trespassers, hogs.... if I didn't invite you in my yard, she'll do the talking for me. we own the house across the street, and the boyfriend of the daughter of the family that used to live there has been seen on the property. he has warrants, we have no trespassing signs that read "Violaters will be shot, survivors will be shot again" |
