my mom recently got her first speeding ticket (ever) and the cop said she was going 69 in a 55, she disagrees with him. we were wondering if the cop has to show you the radar? | ||

not in Georgia... but you can ask for an accuracy test of the radar that you can't see the cop preform either. The cops in Georgia have to tell you that you have the right to an accuracy test before they issue you the ticket, but that's Georgia laws your state may vary (Message edited by johntman on April 07, 2010) | ||

I was stopped on my Uly and asked the officer to show me the radar gun. Barney Fife proceeded to pull the gun's plug out of the cigarette lighter trying to get the gun to the passenger's side of the car to show me. I argued with him that he didn't have anything to show me but when I went to court, I just asked for court supervision and avoided the chance the judge might side with the cop. This cop was such a Bozo that he reminded me of Barney on Mayberry. As sad as this may sound, I really feel that it's all determined by the judge when you go to court. They seem to side with the LEO's more often than not. | ||

you might have better luck with 'RE-CALIBRATING' the speedometer. (chalking it up to a faulty VSS) or show up with the DMV license record/history and throw her self upon the mercy of the court, since it is her 'first speeding ticket EVER' +1 for: it all depends on how the judge is feeling that day 14 MPH over is not too bad. mine have run me $5 per MPH over with a $70 court fee. i'd not bother with a lawyer, but a drivers improvement course is always a good move. rule of thumb is if it's >20 over then it's a 'reckless-speeding' of course the definition of 'reckless' per the interpretation of the arresting officer. | ||

You will have the best luck going to court, pleading guilty, and getting driving school for a first offense. Considering this is the first ticket on her record, it might even get dismissed. | ||

Tell her to go in, plead innocent, and ask for a jury trial. She's a right as all of us do to have a trial by jury. Likely they'll either drop it, or put off the trial indefinitely. They don't want to spend money on a jury trial for a speeding ticket. | ||

I vaguely remember one of my college girlfriends (UNH '87) getting pulled over for speeding on our way back from a party. She hadn't been drinking, but I was extremely inebriated. Upon asking the officer to see the radar gun he politely escorted me to his vehicle where he showed me the registered speed and the verification of the last calibration. I shut up and returned to her car. | ||

first time offense, go for court supervision. It will save you points on your driver's license which will be a HUGE savings on your auto insurance. The fine for speeding is mild as compared to the higher cost of your auto insurance for the next three years. | ||

Not in Florida either... If you go to court, you can request to see the radar cert and log and the operator cert. | ||

Consult with a Lawyer. It is free for the consult. If she has never had a ticket and she knows that she was in the right I would spend the money for a lawyer before spending it on the county for something that she was accused of. I have paid double the cost of the ticket to a lawyer to prove that I did not do it. Otherwise paid the fine because I did do it. | ||

No points in IL, but it's three strikes and your out. Three moving violations in a year and it's 90 day suspension. First offense gets you 4 hours of traffic school, $115 (or more) fine and 90 days supervision. Another ticket in that 90 days gets you two convictions. Haven't found very many sympathetic troopers, and the State PoPo is broke, they are laying off cops and writing tickets like crazy right now to make up some of the dollar gap. | ||

I have just joined a really really cool club. It is The National Motorists Association. Definately go to their site before you do anything. For members they will pay for one ticket a year. The assoc. seems to be really neat, they send you a dvd that tells you how to fight tickets state specific. One stinkin' ticket can cost your mother thousands before all is said and done. The jury trial is also an excelent way to go. In this day and age we can't afford to be fleeced by scumbag pigs and judges who pervert the legal system so that their town can get led traffic lights or new paint for their yellow curbs. Fight 'till you can't fights no more. If they are going to get your money at least make then "earn" it. FTP | ||

I should wear one in my neighborhood as the cops around here all hide out in the nice white areas and let the other parts of town fend for themselves. If you break the law you were sworn to uphold you are a hypocrit. Would you write your mother a ticket ? How about your friend ? I bet not. So yeah, FTP !!!
