I've talked to people who've told me animals don't have emotions. Yesterday I went to bring my other dogs in. I'll spend some time in the back yard with them playing with their toys. My boxer Moose usually jumps around and chases the toys I throw. He did it so half hearted yesterday. He was doing more wandering and whining then anything. He knows his partner in crime is gone. It hurts knowing they know as well.

LOL look at that face in the wind thats awesome K!

Fbolt +1. We got 4 dogs and when the 2 that need the groomers have to go the other 2 whine, won't move and just lay there. As soon as the other 2 get back they're hyperactive again!!!

I was looking for this to post and couldn't find it, then out of the blue a friend sent it to me again. I love it, it always gives me goosebumps. Maybe it's true....

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Thanks Kate,

I've been in a terrible funk since this has happened. Just almost seems like I'm being punished for my childhood stupidity or something. Since June of last year shattering my arm has been the start of things just going to shit! I think I'm blaming myself for this. I don't know what I'm thinking anymore. I got my ass chewed at work yesterday due to other's stupidity. Typically I fire back. This time I just sat and dug deeper into a funk. It would be nice to go for a nice long ride to clear my mind but can't because some dumb ass destroyed my bike in Dec. I dunno...

You are definitely suffering through some tough times. I too have had some rough times recently. I can tell you things get better, even though when you are in the midst of the pain it doesn't seem like they will.

I am sorry for your loss. I too love dogs and I actually still miss the last one who passed away several years ago.

Just try to focus on the good times and get through the bad.

kate, that was great. since i'm outta work it my job to keep tabs on the wifes lhasa apso who is every bit of 16 years old and just pees everywhere cause she doesn't know any better. luckily we haven't had any flooring in the house for quite a while and outside of the two rooms that have been completed, it just plain concrete so it's a lot easier to clean up. although early on, i didn't want the dog(wife did) i learned to deal with her knowing how much she means to diane. so right now she is laying beside me while i'm on the computer and when i finally get motivated to do something besides watching the price is right she'll follow me around like my shadow(literally) who knows how long she got left but we try to make it as easy on her as possible and when she does have an accident, it gets overlooked. the biggest reason for me not wanting animals is because they aren't with you that long and you go through the pain more often. lost two cats over the past couple of years and still have two more but their getting old also. and jess, if i can help get you out on a bike once in a while, let me know. you know i'd do it for ya. but i will come along to help keep an eye out for ya.

I do and truly appreciate it Neil. Just the other day I thought maybe I could get back into refing football and asking my mother-in-law to take her bike out. That turned to hell while out back with the dogs tossing some toys. My Boxer blasted into my leg. I almost lost it. I'm in no shape yet to be doing much other than walking. Hell I can't do that without a pretty severe limp. It's just nice having people to confide in with sounds all douche canoeish.

Keep yer chin up- try to make a habit out of finding all the good things going on in a day's time. If your springtime is as gorgeous as mine, get outside in a comfy chair or hammock and soak in all the goodness.

I know, sounds "douche canoey", but what the hey. ; )

Vamps, thanks for that story. Truth from the mouths of babes, indeed.

The time is nearer every day for my old dog, Loki- a 16YO Basenji, still hanging in there, an old bag of skin and bones. (He loses 10 years whenever we're cooking, otherwise he's ALWAYS next to one of us, hugging our leg.) Sometimes he's content to lay in the sun and relax, but usually I have to let company know to LOOK before they turn around to walk- dog may be in just the right place to trip over. Liable to pee anytime unless we're REALLY on top of his needs. I've resolved to just plan on buying new carpet once he's gone...

Yesterday he was standing beside me, and just fell over- lost his balance, flop! So pitiful, so normal now. I've always called him a "short wheelbase Whippet"- most of his life he's been one of the fastest dogs I've seen- no longer. Makes me think of my own mortality...

Heard a song the other day, didn't get the title or artist, but the chorus I just had to write down:

"Everything that loves has ties that bind,
Everything that you lose, returns to love in time."

Peace, brother.

I know exactly how hard it is to lose a canine friend. My first rotty Kadin was only 6 when he passed. He was everything to me as I had gone through my share of bad times and he was my only constant. The most intelligent, obedient and loyal dog I ever had. Truly my protector. Nobody could tell me why he died, he just did, over a course of a few short weeks. We tried everything to save him to no avail. It broke my heart in two.
But things did get better for me in the time to follow and eventually I couldn't bear not having a mate next to me, so I got the current fella. I still miss the big guy though and he comes up in conversation still (10 years later).
I know sometimes life can seem really crap, and you wonder why you are being dealt the hand you have. I won't say there is a reason for it and go all karma-ish, because if there is a reason, I have no freakin idea what it is, but I do know that if you hang in long enough, things will get better.
I hit a stage where I thought if I wasn't at the end I was certainly near the edge of it, but everything has turned around now.
Try and do little things every day that make you remember how important it is to stay strong and get through to the other side of your funk. Give things time to heal without pushing it. Life will get better, then befoe you know it, life will be good again.
