Since my taste tends to lead in a different direction,
http://wepad.mobi/en
We built a platform based on two established, well-known technologies, Android and Linux, meaning that software developers can dream up apps for anything you may want to do with your WePad (and even some things you might never have dreamed possible yourself). It’s quick and simple – and needless to say, any app that already exists for Android also runs on the WePad. Right out of the box.

Pwned. Seriously? First of all, seriously for using that term. Wow. Second of all, seriously, like you think this thing will sell better than or be more popular than the iPad?

If so, that's awesome. I'm all for competition - after all, it's what lets me have a great choice when it comes to buying motorcycles. And I'm also (obviously, owning a Buell) all for the so-called little guy. But to say the WePad is going to "pwn" the iPad is like saying EBR is going to "pwn" the factory Japanese teams. Like I said, it would be awesome. That thing looks cool and being open source is much better for people who want to tinker with their devices. And from what little I can glean from their website it seems to have quite a few technical advantages over the iPad. But realistically - "ipad just got pwned"? I doubt it. How much will it cost? I certainly don't see that info on their site. It's not even available for preorder yet, so it seems it's at least a few months away.

And . . . see my post from 09APR.

It is too bad that the printing thing has held back so many sales. I think they were only able to sell 600,000 or so in the first week. What a shame...

Look, I don't have an iPad, I've never touched an iPad, and I couldn't care less whether it's the best thing since sliced bread or the worst overpriced piece of crap in the world. I just find it very amusing that so many folks who have never touched it feel that they know it's a piece of crap. I also find it amusing that so many people who have never touched it think it's the future of all humanity.

Regardless in which camp you find yourself, you're only a mouthpiece for one or two analysts who came up with these ideas first. If you want to just spout someone else's drivel without firsthand knowledge, knock yourself out. You make people laugh - either because they agree with your parroting, or because they know you're just a parrot.

I think it's all funny!
To get so emotional about it, either side.
Sean, you're the first I've seen to be so passionate about not being passionate. ; )

I couldn't care less, well not exactly, it does make some good fun.
I love all the cartoons, and stuff, from both sides.
I think the windows guy are more funny though. Even though it's usually in retaliation to something mac did.
Still really funny!

I love how Linux is ignored by both sides as being some creature from outer space.
Second of all, seriously, like you think this thing will sell better than or be more popular than the iPad?
Actually I believe the spirit of Linux isn't necessarily to become the mega rich ala Gates and Jobs, just better, more control, customizable.
There's little a mac or win can do, that Linux can't, and do it more cost effectively.

Using Gimp to do animations

I'm trying to ween myself from Photoshop to Gimp.
I love Photoshop, but I no longer have the means to afford it any longer, unless of course I get hired in the graphics world.
A dream come true!

I guess I just get really tired of people spouting stuff regarding things about which they know nothing. The Internet is rife with folks who think they know a lot because they read it somewhere, or they subscribe to a lot of blogs, or they're a member of PC or Mac forums. I'm just a big fan of experiencing things and not just reading about them and making a judgment based on what someone else thinks.

The sad thing is that Bob the thread originator, and the few guys who actually have iPads aren' even in the thread anymore. It all went downhill with the jabs about how "it doesn't run Flash" and "Apple doesn't have the market share" came out. The thread went from something that might have been informative to a debate about whether Apple sucks, and how much. It destroys any value that the thread may have had.

That's why I went to an Apple store this weekend and played with an iPad. It was neat, but not $500 neat. I might get one after the 2nd generation comes out. But at least now I can say that I know a little bit about it.

And really, what is the Internet for except to learn things, right? I come here to learn how to fix/improve my Buell. And if I can learn something else, that's great. But I stopped learning about personal experience with the iPad after a half dozen contentious posts about Apple being a ripoff, or not as good as something else.

In the end, this has turned into me being just as bad as the shit-stirrers, and going completely off-topic. I apologize to Bob and other iPad owners, and anyone else who actually wanted to learn something about how well the iPad does in real life, from a real person. So I'm done in this thread.

Sean, this may come as a shock to you, but I hate Apple products based on experience! I secretly have an iTouch.

Out of all the portable devices I have owned and used over the years, I rate it second to worst. Only thing to best it would be the Sony Mylo.

Yes, I am making assumptions with the iPad, but being that it basically is an enlarged iTouch I feel I can come to the conclusion that it is an overpriced pile of crap.

If sales numbers are a measure of how much better a product is than their competitors, then Windows 7 must be awesome because it has sold 90 million copies. I haven't found a solid copy of the OSX sales numbers, but data I read shows Win7 has a greater market share than OSX already.

Dusting off this thread with the news that I knew was just a matter of time in coming...

From: http://www.darkreading.com/smb-security/security/a ttacks/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=226600381&cid=R SSfeed

quote:

They went after Internet Explorer, Java, and Adobe vulnerabilities on the victims' machines, which spanned Windows XP (121,000 infected machines); Windows Vista (106,000 infected machines); Windows 7 (66,000 infected machines); and even MacOS (nearly 4,000 infected Apple machines). "That's how far they threw their net," Antsis says. The attackers took advantage of these users not patching or updating their apps and visiting the rigged websites, he says.

The malware is in the wild, Pandoras box has been opened, and the days of "I'm safe because I am on a mac" are gone.

(Don't get me wrong, I still think the mac is a great platform for people that like it, I just want people to know its not magic and you still have to use common sense and *will* need security controls.)

Also, everyone enjoying the "just click here, instant jailbreak" on the IPhone and IPad.. think it through... it's also "one click seamless compromise" if it's a bad guy doing it.

OS 4.0.2 just came out, if you are using OS 4, you should upgrade ASAP.

A nice thing about the jailbreaking, all jailbroken iPhones have the same root password. Top notch security right there, especially with SSH enabled.
