Alright, a walk down memory lane today. These guys were anything but obscure back in 1979, when they released their masterpiece, "Get the Knack". Great time in U.S. music, the backlash against disco was in full swing, and these guys came out singing shocking lyrics that made us blush, but dance.
I just read that their lead singer passed away last month from brain tumors and lung cancer. Just a reminder that we're not getting any younger, and need to laugh and dance every chance we get. From California, looking handsome and really young as they rock the skinny ties (first 2 videos), here's "THE KNACK":
ST3ers-Wow, I remember that Animal Logic song, really liked it back then, but had no clue who it was. Don't think I've heard it in about 19 years.
Moxnix-were you watching VH1 today? We caught some of the "one hit wonders" late this afternoon. Some are staples on our local "bad sing along" radio station, which, despite frightening animals and children, I sometimes listen (and sing along) to.
Really sad today, the BBC in it's infinite wisdom is to axe my favourite radio show next week. It's Mary Fox's Soul Show, on BBC Radio Stoke which has been on every Friday for the last 6 or so years. It's one of the most listened to shows on the BBC iplayer. Yes it's the same old story "Concentrating on core values" blah blah blah.
If you'd like to listen to last weeks show here's a link.
This song has been the closing track at Northern Soul disco's & allnighters for many years & was the last tune played at my wedding, we danced round the floor to this while the clearing up went on around us.
S3- REPOST!! Gotta look back a ways on this thread, I mentioned Animal Logic months ago...
Got to see them play live at the Cannery in Nashville- a buddy went with me who's a bassist, we were dying to see Stanley Clarke play, not to mention THE Stewart Copeland!!
It was a general admission show, but we were first in line to get in and get good seats. Security finally let everyone in, we rushed to find the first 6 whole rows of seats were roped off!! WTF?!
I started thinking- there had been a long-haired important looking dude going in and out before the crowds rushed in, talking to security, obviously he was not just a longhair but a bigwig- I told my buddy "watch this", went over to dude and a security guy and asked them what was the deal with the roped off section? He said "for reserved seating", but then he asked how many peeps was with me- I said "just me and my bud"- then dude said "well, go ahead and pick out a couple of good seats"- WOO-HOO!!!
While the rest of the unwashed masses watched, the two of us deliberated on the absolute best seats- "First row? Nah, too close to see everything, let's try 3rd row center", etc. What fun! After we finally found the optimal seats, folks just started jumping the rope, classic free-for-all!
Needless to say, it was a GREAT show- Stewart's eyes as big as saucers, never looking at the drums, just A MACHINE, Stanley just jamming, and the chick singing like a songbird. (Dammit I can't remember her name, shame on me, she was the songwriter and singer for the band.)
Good repost, anyhoo...
Anyone remember "The Ocean Blue"? Great emo rockers, got to see them open for The Psychedelic Furs years ago... they've got the last track on that compilation disc I mentioned earlier.
My Bad. A heinous transgression on my part. My apologies to all affected. I shall self impose a posting ban of 6 days in this thread beginning on Mon. Please keep this thread going till my fetter expires on Sat. I can't find your mention Squids?
Love - the thread - a bit of anxiety in the case of a repost though . Thank god I went back far enough in the thread to see that someone had posted Steve Earl already.
Got some good music that was added to the riding list for the homecoming trip - keep it coming - thanks!
Probably a repost -a little mellow but here it is:
Wow, just waiting for the pancaked headed bunny to appear. Timely too, just before Easter!
Grumpy-it sucks when stuff you love goes away. There's been an epidemic of it in our lives this past year, most of it economically driven. Looks like you can still catch the old shows, but yeah, its never the same.
Heaven forbid this turns out to be a repost. Here's another garage band, this one from Detroit. Ko Melina is a groovy chick, love her show on Little Steven's Underground garage. Anything by her bands (KO AND THE KNOCKOUTS or THE DIRTBOMBS) or anything she plays on her radio show sure beats the Taylor Swift crap the clueless kids listen to nowadays.
Here's a band I hope to see live someday, THE DIRTBOMBS:
OH MY, 86129squids, Leon Russell and "Muskrat love"? Wow. You definitely get the strangest song by unexpected artist award for that.
Here's someone I mentioned in an earlier post but did not post any music. Saw this guy in Charleston at Wavefest. He had a couple hits in the 90's, and thankfully is still around. Was a judge on an a-capella tv show that aired around Christmas this past year, he was really the only reason we tuned in to that show. Here's a dude who knows his way around a piano, BEN FOLDS.
+1 Alison Moyet. Loved Yaz (aka Yazoo). Her voice IS amazing.
This thread rocks. Not only is it good fodder for the mp3, but we're gearing up for a trip back home for class reunions this summer. They will need soundtracks. This is good stuff, keep the posts coming!
Anyone remember The Throwing Muses? "Dizzy" is on one of the compilation discs I'd mentioned earlier, great lil tune!
Getting ready to see The Unknown Hinson Saturday nite- woohoo! Hopefully after a day of riding the Shovel with my sweetie... otherwise we're gonna try out the tandem bicycle- I'd rather be on the Shovel...
Vampress-I heard that song on my son's fav "smooth jazz" station, not sure if it or the artist was ever "top 40" popular, but it's a good tune.
86129-+1 on Throwing Muses. Tonya Donnelly has an awesome voice. Remember her other project, BELLY and the "Feed the Tree" song? It got some exposure on MTV's 120 minutes.
Here's another 90's band, DADA. A 3 piece snarky frat boy band (btw, no spanish transalation for "snarky", if I was a betting woman, would've been $20 richer . Great lyrics, awesome harmonization. Never saw them live, sure they'd be fun to see. Wish I could find better stuff of theirs on Youtube. I enjoyed everything they put out, musically, Dada is like peeling back an onion, there's more and more there, not exactly how it appears on the surface.
+1 Primal Scream. I recall George Clinton producing one of their late 90's cd's and it being extremely funky. "Country Girl" got some airplay a couple years back on satellite radio.
Speaking of George Clinton, funk (make my funk the p-funk, thanks) and that whole other worldly scene, here's the Hammond B3 freaky deaky funkster for your Friday listening pleasure.
