As I read this I was watching tv and the introduction of the Ipad. I was thinking how similar Hardley is to Microsoft same old stuff repackaged, and then Apple changing prgoressively and innovativly.

Thank You Pso. I was thinking the same thing just a bigger package.

I also cannot help but think about the email that they put out. It claimed that you made a mistake or something like that.

In reading that article, I was reminded of that OFFENSIVE E-Mail ad I got from Harley essentially telling me that "everyone makes mistakes, but you can correct yours by trading in yours for a Harley." This was less than two weeks AFTER October 15, 2009. To suggest that I was both offended and infuriated by that ad would be an understatement and I BLASTED the dealership who sent it to me.

I think the article is completely correct. Just look at BMW Motorcycles. All the new bikes that they have released in the last few years without the opposed twin. All of these bikes were aimed at a purpose, and a crowd preference. If you want a parallel twin, they have one. If you want an inline 4, they got it, etc. Harley must move forward, and start redefining their product, or their arrogance will be the cause of their demise.
I was pissed at the email too. "Lets criticize everyone's taste in bikes, and call them stupid!"......................

"...not until she's 18."

Ummm, guess they live in Kentucky or something- in my state that's basically statutory rape, IIRC.

It fascinates me how many ways HD marketing demonstrates their complete stupidity...

(hey, that ad is a SPOOF - it comes from an OLD JOKE about Harley riders)

IT DOES make a statement about Wandell's wanting to return to Harley's "core demographic."

What does a motorcycle manufacturer do when everyone that wants a motorcycle, has one?
They market to easily manipulated fools, and convince them "they need one too."

The problem with doing that, is what we see happening to Harley now...

Notice the Buell haters still cropping up in responses to the article. Guess they haven't read the May issue of Cycle World.

I'm 45 and not even looking at a Harley and probably never will. The XR 1200 did make me stop. But to me it was another throw back bike from the 70's Evel Knievel era.

I would like to see that 57 ad changed to a Buell on it.

I'm still reading the responses. Most places still don't have May's issue on the stands yet.

This was just too damn funny not to repost!

MIke says:

"OMG. The Buell people chime in every time. The bikes were less desirable than the other products competing for customers, for a variety of reasons. Chief among these were the appearance and the awkward chassis geometry. So a less attractive, less sexy sportbike was Erik’s business model? HE WAS UNPROFITABLE FOR NEARLY THREE STRAIGHT DECADES! Go back to the Star Trek convention and stop bringing up Erik’s holy name on every stinking forum you can find!"

Yes but most of these people who get angry like that do not know of the back room politics that went on to crush other motorcycle companies in one way or another. Buying out a foundry contract to mysteriously loosing a traded in bike after it had been sold to a Harley dealer. Most of the time the bikes were cut up or crushed.
Sometimes gangster tactics were used.
Yes I know this was during the depression era in time and that didn't help either.

86192squids: 18 is just the year she can VOTE. Most States have an earlier age where they can have consensual sex, or get married without parental permission.

For example, Joey Buttofuoco wouldn't've been nailed for statutory rape of Amy Fisher if they both lived in New Jersey where the age of consent is only 16. Here in New York, however, it's 17.

This weekend I am at the lake raking leaves with my hot girlfriend. All day yesterday and today, until it started raining, I watched H-D(spit) riders with their annoying loud pipes and bad boy/bad girl scowls on their collective faces.

Do you know what my hot girlfriend asked me? Do you thing the Little Kid could ride the Ulysses up today?

Do you know what bike went by after the rain started? A Busa!

H-D(spit)....I just can't say it again...

Gotta love Washington, you can get married as early as 14.. and even legally marry your first cousin.
(age of consent is still 16, but if you marry her {with parental consent} you are all legal)
All the rednecks aint in the South.

By the way, the governor that passed both of those laws is now in the White House staff as Commerce Secretary. Thank you Mr Locke ( I am thinking his wife had a sexy teen neice that he wanted a piece of)

I know my name is usually taboo around here (now more than usual), but I'm glad you guys liked the first installment.

It wasn't really intended to be a part of the whole April Fools thing (I wrote Part 1 almost a month ago). I've been remiss in getting Part 2 finished, but it should be out shortly (Easter is throwing a wrench in me completing it this weekend).

However I think Part 3 is what is going to interest the Buell fans the most since it draws heavily on a lot of things learned from HD's ownership of Buell.

Screwing around with your identity does not lend credibility.

That said, the article in A&R is well done!

Whoops, I forgot about my promise to post a link to Part 2, so here you go:

http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/oped/how-to-save-h arley-davidson-part-2-product-lineup/

I'd like to think Part 3 will be up this weekend, but I'm being dragged to a wedding (no, not my own), so probably that'll be out early next week. This is probably the article that will interest the Buellers (Ferris?) the most.
