I'm looking for some advice on getting something patented. What hoops do I have to jump through for this. What hoops can I jump through by myself (without a layer)? I know there are a couple patenteers on the forum here, and I could use some advice on getting started.
Hex, you out there?
I'm looking basically for the cheapest/easiest route I can take to get this done. I have no problems filling out paperwork, and have a few friends that can take care of the layer end of it. Can it be done without a layer? Can I do a search by myself instead of paying someone $400 to do it? How about a trustworthy source to get started? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm trying to block the whole experience from my memory. What a PITA.

Start reading everything at Ztferrari's link USPTO.GOV--you can do the whole thing yourself through that site.

A long time family friend of mine is a registered patent agent. He has ushered hundreds of patents through the process including mine. He charged me a discounted $100 hr. and was very honest with his billing time. He helped me write the patent. Before I did it I didn't have a clue what it was all about, now I know slightly less.

The government fees alone are expensive. The rejections are heartbreaking. The bureaucracy is bullshit. However, I'm glad I did it.

You can do all the research on the USPTO site in PAIR.

I just checked out the site again, and it looks like the interface has been upgraded for the better.

Good luck, approach it like a college course, might take you four years to complete.

good luck.... it can be a long road, and I suspect the lawyers help make it so. If what you're after is a design patent, there's probably an opportunity for a DIY-er. OTOH my one utility patent took 7-8 years..... pretty much gave up on it (heck even the lawyer had changed firms). But eventually it came through.

Best thing is to develop a "finished prototype" of what ever it is. Then sell it to someone that can produce and market the item.

With the Chinese knocking off stuff so fast the ink on a patent won't even be dried, before it's knocked off. Get in quick, get a decent pay check and call it a day.
