man, ya can't just say that and leave! damn, details, at least some; power, weight, size, something... i mean i love my xb, it's sitting right here next to me in my kitchen, but man a light powerful engine and that thing would taken the world... i have a friend, the best natural rider i have had the pleasure of riding with and a diehard hd hater. plenty was said when i came home with a Buell. one twenty minute ride on Richard Russell hwy in north Geaorgia and i found him sitting on the side of the road next to my xb (he had left me in the dust on his "supeior" japanese i4). he had an odd look, said he just had an "experience" unlike any other in 45 yrs of riding. the damn chassis was that good! It's sad to see how awful it must have been to work under those ridiculous constraints. Must have been frustrating. That being said, through all of that, I ended up with a bike that is perfect for me. Thank you. | ||

The stuff I summarised I hadn't heard of before, except for hearing that there had been designs for a turbo XB. Fast - A single cylinder, full on, sport bike would have been awesome... doh! "...and it was radical as hell." So I guess it wasn't a run of the mill inline triple... Hmm, mass centralised, fuel in frame 650 triple? A W or Y configuration maybe? Narrow angle V like a Volkswagen maybe? Different size pistons? Dohhhhh!!!!!!!!!! | ||

Here's another almost-was: "Instead of a radical street-fighter being the next 1125 derivative following the CR cafe racer, a full-on supersport model- the previously mentioned B2- was substituted." I wonder what the 1125 street-fighter would have looked like? I'd love to figure it out and modify my CR to match. | ||

If you really want to feel agony, Hughlysses, think of S1 reminiscent styling with 160HP. Of course, y'all got the big and bad XR1200R now as a "Streetfighter". Trojan and DD say it's great. We'll see what the stop watch says at the AMA races (yawn). | ||

It's hard to imagine just how differently things might have gone for Buell if HD had held up their end of the deal, but I've been thinking about it. (1)- In 2000, the Blast engine comes in at the projected cost (80% less than it actually did). That makes a reasonable list price for a Blast, what, $2500, $3000? How many more Blasts would have sold than actually did? (2) Blasts sell like hotcakes, leading to development of a sportier variant and maybe a scrambler variant? Buell brings in many beginning riders who otherwise would have purchased other brands. (3) The XB9 engine comes in as budgeted, and the bikes list for $7995 instead of $9995 making it cost-competitive with Japanese 600cc sport bikes. How many more of those would have sold? (4) In 2004, instead of the XB12, we get the XB13.5 listing at $9995. How many of THOSE would have sold? (5) In 2005, HD works out a deal with Aerocharger and we get the turbocharged XB13.5 Diablo with 150 HP. (6) In 2006, the race only XBRR debuts, having benefited from thousands of miles of durability testing on the earlier XB13.5 street bikes and is competitive right out of the box. Buell wins the Daytona Sport Bike championship in 2007. (7) Buell's first water-cooled superbike, the 1125R debuts in 2007, having benefited from big investments in R&D and styling allowed by the big profits generated by the highly successful XB series. Critics rave about the performance and styling of the bikes and these sell like hot cakes world-wide. (8) In 2008, the Buell dirt bike debuts, adding a whole new contingent to the ranks of Buell riders. (9) In 2009, the street version of the 1190RR debuts, giving Buell a bike eligible for American Superbike and World Superbike competition. A street legal dual-sport version of the dirt bike is added. (10) In 2010 in it's second year of competition, Buell wins the American Superbike championship. The 1190RR proves competitive in its first year of World Superbike competition. A super motard version of the dirt bike is added as well as a streetfighter version of the 1125. (11) In 2011, the line of Buell 700cc 3-cylinder middle weight bikes is introduced, starting with a streetfighter and a sport bike. In 2012 a middle weight adventure tourer is added. How differently would things have turned out if just one or two of those speculations had come true? I never did like the idea of Griffin being an MX bike for Racing... I dont care about racing; for example what Stoner, Rossi do on the track has no bearing on how I ride where I ride or the speeds that I get to ride them at. Same thing with dirt. I need to be able to get to the trail on the bike, it needed to be a street legal DS,SM.....and if you look at the market how long has Suzuki dominated that segment... 15 YEARS. They could have used some competition at the 450 level. Damn HD | ||

Hugh.. The one fatal problem with that is that HD is not mentioned one time, there-for offending the great motor-ship so the brand must be punished. lol It is beyond me why HD ever picked up Buell. I mean it seemed that they handicapped them every step of the way almost trying to get them to fail. So now the biggest mystery is not why did thy canned Buell We now know they were jealous. They picked them up looking for the opportune time to end them! My dad had a friend who worked at Buell back when they had first bought into them and was alluding to this. He went on to work at Ford so I heard nothing more about it. But he was worried then that H-D was buying them to eventually kill them.... | ||

The timing or at least the speed of the closure makes no sense. Steve says in the article that the cost to close Buell in 2009 was approximately equal to HD's entire investment in Buell up to that point. And the point in closing Buell was to save money to invest in HD? How screwed up is that? | ||

Closure of Buell was personal not economic. HD is the Tiger Woods or Jesse James of the motorcycle world. Once the world finds out what a scum bag you are, they turn their back in a red hot second. Everyone is willing to cheer on HD as the great American success story until the population find out that HD is a soulless corporate entity willing to screw anyone over. In this case, we've seen a company molest and murder one of it's own adopted children. Sad. | ||

I definitely believe that Erik will be back in some capacity hopefully with a company that can see his vision and principles. All I want is for HD to be seen as the mindless corporate eating machine they are. |
