About 6 months ago I was doing pre-flight checks and noticed the front brake light switch was shot. Brakes worked fine but the switch was worn and didn't activate the brake lights. The rear switch worked fine. I ordered the part but meantime was feeling frisky so I took the switch apart and put a little drop of solder on the contact. To my surprise, it worked fine. The replacement part came in and I put it aside for to install when I had time. Yesterday I noticed it was broken again. NO IDEA WHERE I PUT THAT LITTLE F*%$ER! Spent over an hour already checking all the "safe places" I put valuable little parts with no luck On the slightly positive side, while I was checking the various little storage areas I use under the seat, I noticed the little screw (remote reservoir clamp fastener) for the rear shock is gone. How the hell would that come out? Back to the search! | ||

Pushing the two hour search mark and so far I found about a dozen mini-fuses, original mirrors, factory horn and mounting bracket, the missing half of a zipper to zipper riding pant to riding jacket,a couple feet of brake line hose and various connectors from breather reroute projects, at least 6 different electrical adaptors/extensions from full set of gerbings heated gear, a handful of spare parts and lock cores from the 5 broken hard case latches I've replaced (they stopped breaking when I removed the weather stripping, one old fan, a set of Lyndal gold brake pads ( do they have shelf life?), a headlight wiring harness, spare oil dipstick, 2 and a half posi-lock splicers and $1.46 in change. Oh yes, walking across the garage for the 50th time I saw a small white bag on the workbench with the switch sealed inside. WTF? I sometimes think the ghost of my father hangs out in my garage (he too spent hours tinkering in his garage workshop) and messes with me or moves stuff when he gets bored, I can almost hear his cheerful laughter | ||

This sounds like any one of my various projects in progress. Now where the he11 did I stash that widget for future use?? Usually found right where I left it (after what can be hours of ranting and searching). My Dad was a constant tinkerer as well and sometimes hear him lament "don't get old, you'll put things away and never find them again", while I'm pluggin' away at something. Must be in the genes...... He passed on last summer but still hangs around to laugh at my ineptitudes I'm sure. | ||

Thx Midnightrider' Dad for making the Badwebbers smile. indeed! I can still hear my dad going 'gotta have a system' when it came to organizing tools .... I was looking for a new dipstick the other day.... by the time I found it, the shop was certainly a good bit tidier!.... thanks dad | ||

It's called "Dynamic storage". A system I've used for many years, drives my wife mad "Why don't you organise the garage properly & put stuff where you can find it?" My answer is always to the effect that when I'm looking for something I find loads of other stuff so I know what I have "in stock". You all know how it is, "I know I have one of those/ something that'll do the job/ an old one, somewhere in here." | ||

Lyndal gold brake pads ( do they have shelf life?) Yes, yours are old, send to me immediately for proper disposal  As long as they've stayed dry, they ought to be fine. I can lose a wrench I just used, and barely put down. It's very irritating. Not the losing of the wrench, the ribbing of the wife once she finds out I've lost something else. "Is that it in your back pocket?" | ||

Just don't put a screwdriver in your back pocket then jump in the drivers seat to crank it over. It's not good on the upholstery. | ||

I have my FIRST roll around tool cabinet coming for my birthday... I FINALLY got tired of taking bolts off and 5 mins later saying..."where the FU%* did i put those bolts." But... sometimes its humorous  Matt. | ||

Iman i had a similar experience today. Except i did not find mine. Grabbed a scarf instead. so pretty much i spent the entire ride looking like Snoopy with my scarf flapping away in the breeze. | ||

I am with Steve, purchasing a new one always guarantees finding the old.Or if you have completely given up and are days/weeks later futiley searching for something else, you will certainly find the last thing you were looking for in plain sight! And I have a magic screwdriver drawer---if you go looking for a phillips all you find are flat blades and torx,you can come right back for that big flat blade only to find a drawer full of phillips and clutch heads!!!???? | ||

After more than 10 years with the same roller, mid, top and side box set I'm instinctive where my tools are, plus the fact that I'm in it every day helps. The first couple years were tough though. | ||

I once came back from a days ride, took off of my gear and the spent a good 10min looking for my helmet .. only to realize I was still wearing it. Man, i just did this today. While installing my HID kit, i was also putting on the Uly Socket Lighter. Only thing is i couldn't find the SOB. I just had it in my hand 15min ago. Looked for 20 min over the same spots, each time slowing down to see if i missed it. I bought 2 from Bumpus and i was just about to open the other one when BAM..... On the tray under my seat... I hate it when 30 min jobs turn into 2 hours! | ||

I moved my buddys,(Basement Bobbys) junky sofas and projection TV into my garage(It all has an expiration date of April 15) and moved the bikes to the front of the garage(including Basement Bobbys Kanatuna). The Little Kid unlocked the disc lock and cable from the Sporty to move it and promptly forgot where he put it. Three of us looked for it for 45 minutes(it would have been 4 of us but Basement Bobby couldn't get his wheel chair into the garage) We finally gave up and then we found it on the work bench under the Dewalt 18V drill that I set down when I was done attaching junk to the walls. Basement Bobby has a friend, Coffee Table Ken. The last time Coffee Table Ken was visiting he was carrying a plate full of food over to my massage chair, when his leg gave out(he fell off a barn while fixing the roof) and he fell onto my coffe table, breaking it and spilling a plate full of food onto my massage chair and knocking over a beer on my carpet. Ken swears that he had a knife an fork on the plate but we never found the knife, I looked in the chairs and couch, but no knife, I wonder when that is going to show up... |
