Another day, another chick with pipes. Saw this artist at a music fest in St. Pete, FL. Chris Isaak headlined the show in his mirrored suit, but this lady really blew us away with her vocals. She's an extremely under-rated artist who stirred up a hornet's nest with the first song here. Ladies and gents, from Kentucky via NYC, JOAN OSBORNE (no relation to Ozzy .
bah 300+ posts later, if no one has mentioned "king missile", that's some hilarious stuff! try - "wuss", "sensitive artist", "jesus was way cool" - all very funny
It always amazes me just how many people dont know who he is... if you don't research him, you will be surprised just where all this man shows up. Tom Waits- Pasties and a G string.
Good and interesting stuff. Mr. Grumpy, you must be proud, starting such a groovy thread n all. Oooof, King Missile. Didn't they have that "Detachable ...." song. yikes!
+1 Reckless Kelly. Never heard of Jason Ricci before, cool stuff.
Gotta head "half back" in honor of all the dragon stickers I saw in Daytona today. Saw some wolfpen stickers too, that was cool! Ya either love or hate this dude, but gotta respect his bloodline. Never seen him live, but I got a feeling it'd be an entertaining show. From Nashville, here's HANK (as in HANK WILLIAMS) III.
Flgirl- you're following several artists who get regular play on WDVX, Hank III amongst them.
Speaking of Jason Ricci, he guests with one of my favorite guys- Motor City Josh (who I've mentioned earlier) on his latest recording "Forty-Four: A Tribute To Howlin' Wolf"- ALL youn's should check out Josh's disc, fabulous!!

Here's some good peeps, good friends from around Nashville: Blue Mother Tupelo; their latest recording is "Heaven And Earth". Last time they were at the Shed, I loaned them a steel drum ("dounbek"?) that I'd bought years ago in Atlanta- they used my drum on a couple of tracks for this recording.
Ricky and Micol are popular favorites here in Knoxvegas- they've done New Year's shows several times here in "Mur-vil", pack the house every time...
Got to see Motor City Josh last nite- didn't even know he was in town until late in the day- as usual, a helluva show...
Just remembered a guy who I've not seen in a while- the bar owner here locally has gotten too cheap to book good acts regularly- check out Ben Prestage. Kid is a one-man show, plays at least 2-3 cigar box handmade guitars, can JAM on anything.
Thank you for the rockabilly stuff. Please keep it coming. There is limited quality radio here in central FLOR-I-DUH. Huge culture shock after the vast radio choices in the twin cities. Thank goodness NOW for the web and for satellite radio.
Peacock moment here, upon recent success of the "musicial horizon expanding" aspect of my parental duties last weekend. Was playing some of the rockabilly thread postings and my little man took a break from Wii-ing to ask what was playing. Said it sounded kind of like the Reverend, but he liked the Reverends live stuff better! Yay! Objective met! Reinforcement of why a live performance by real musicians so kicks azz on almost anything else out there.
So, for today, here's another extraordinary musician we had the fortune of seeing live at our favorite indie Orlando venue. One of our fav former local bands (more on them later) opened and it was a most excellent experience. From Missouri, DEKE DICKERSON AND THE ECCO-PHONICS...
Interview/couple live songs-does it look to anyone else like he got slugged on the left side of his jaw? Maybe the missus got pizzed cuz he decided not to come home at all lol... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IddNlbgSxBc&feature =related
This is one of my favorite bands.A solid reputation and technically admired by players everywhere. He doesn't tour much but is awesome live. This is the blues of RONNIE EARL & BROADCASTERS
Inspired by a really fun bi-lingual class I co-taught this past weekend with some Colombian and Venezuelan students. "Vroom vroom" is indeed universal and I had my 3rd recent Venezuelan student ask a bunch of questions about the Uly. She's currently a gixxer rider, but thought the Buells were cool and did not know they were no longer made. I'm learning to teach "en espanol", one thing I'm trying is learning by listening to latin music. David Byrne's Luaka bop label has a bunch of latin jazzy funky stuff including this group from Venezuela, LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES.
For some great Latin guitar work, check out Strunz and Farah- they've got several good recordings out there.
Flgirl- David Byrne has a very good CD that came out a few years ago, "Rei Momo"- every track is a different Latin dance style, quite listenable!
Good on ya for working in a bi-lingual mileu- my GF is Dominican, can't understand nuttin when she calls her brother/dad... despite having been prez of my Spanish club WAAAY back in high school...
86129-that's cool that your s.o. is Dominican, you've got someone to practice your spanish with! "Mas despacio, por favour" (more slowly please) is a lifeline! Hadn't heard of that David Byrne compilation, I'll give it a listen.
Check out the Beliza Tropical cd's...muy excellente!
I bought this CD a few years back: Jaco Pastorius Big Band, "Word Of Mouth Revisited". This is a 2003 recording, with a modern-day who's who of bass players, all working with a true "big band" orchestra conducted by Peter Graves.
A hybrid of fantastic jazz bassists working with a big band, doing Jaco Pastorius' music- very good, different ear candy. On the Heads Up label, www.headsup.com
