alright guys, so lets hear some of your ways to cure this disease. one of my buddies just got a old lightning x1, and sure as hell isnt used to it yet, but insists on being a squid with it more than he should! he's already been in a very close call accident that would have killed him if he didnt have his helmet on, and his old honda was toast. but now this bike is a big step up in tq from the honda, and will pull the front wheel up a lot easier, just a little concerned and dont want him to get into any trouble

Cut a plug wire. Other than that, get him riding with a responsible crowd. They won't put up with shit like that.

Could also take away the keys and hope he isn't smart enough to hot wire it.

i would like to get him (and myself) riding with a responsible crowd, but being 18 we dont know anybody else our age who rides and old people tend to not like riding w/ young people (grantid this will be the first summer we are on buells so who knows how it will pan out this riding season). I've told him i wont ride with him if he's going to ride like a jackass, but he just says shit like "it was a yellow light i wanted to make so i gunned it...i didnt mean to wheelie...."

he's taken the MFS course already actually even though i am trying to get him to take it w/ me again! but he just has the wrong attitude about it (i alreay can ride why would i waste a weekend learning old stuff?)

as far as vids go, i'll have to try that!

and with the "letting crash thing" he's done that arleady! last summer an
old lady pulled out in front of him, and he went into her windshield! he was in the hospital for like three weeks w/ broken bones, and now has no splien! but for some reason it didnt seem to phase him much.....most people come to realize they arent invincable when things like that happen.....not him.....

Ian, I am always the young one in the group, I don't care. Everyone I rode with in their teens/20's is a dipshit. I don't care that Ft_bstrd and Chadhargis are old and have kids and crap, that just makes them slower and more responsible. Just hang in the middle of the pack with them, you will still have a great time, and are more likely to make it home.

I hope that he is durable, because his facebook post reads like he thinks he is Superman. Three weeks in a hospital should have taught him that he is not. Straighten your friend up because the penalty for stupidity can be severe. Check the Stromfronts for riders in your area and try and hook up with them. Once he gets what his Buell is about wheelies will be a thing of the past.

His opinion seems to be that his bike is badass [so of course, so is he]. Not much besides the realization of his own mortality will change that. Ownership doesn't equate skill.

Hopefully he'll keep wearing his gear and if he finally gets bored with the noise he's making about himself he'll settle down. Maybe.

Don't try so hard you push him away, sounds like from his attitude he's not listening to what anyone says anyway. But maybe you can live and ride right and he'll see that as a better way eventually.

Prolly want try and be his friend from a safe distance that way you can give him some support next time he's in the hospital recuperating.

It is always sad to see stuff like this. I will admit to haveing done some dumb things on motorcycles, but it was on the dirt so it was ok you fall off pick your bike up and do it again. On the street how ever I try not to do dumb stuff but in the past have had freinds that like to ride long wheelies down crowded streets and stuff to that effect and they always end up paying for it in the end. Weather it be wrecking, going to jail or what ever. Now that I am a little older I tend to not ride with those types any more. In fact I do most of my ridding alone with the occasional ride with others because I don't want to try to keep up with anyone eles or have some one try to keep up with me as I feel that some one will be riding out of there comfort zone and that is were people get hurt.

>>>I don't care that Ft_bstrd's old......... If that's the case I must be antique , others here even more so.

Watch out when riding with the Dinosaurs they can make up for youth and enthusiasm with experience and treachery.

just because you get older doesn't mean you get smarter, i can attest to that one, eh froggy. and besides that last trip over the hill, with the closing of buell,i just don't want to take a chance at loosing another bike because i was stupid. go try and hook up with other buellers. although some have squid tendencies, most of them know when not to do it.

Positive peer pressure works best.
I know this guy that used to ride a new 12 R.
Not really a squid, but a big show off, that didn't know riding gear was cool.
Now he wears proper gear, I doubt he'll quit showing off, but at least now he knows there's a time and place for everything.

With regards to MSF.
Since y'all have already taken the beginners course, take the intermediate class, or take another class like Total Rider Tech. One of the instructors is a BadWeBber, and one of the O G 3%ers.

The Face book post shows me he's into all the attention that comes with his bullet-proof attitude.
If he was a girl, I'd bet he'd be a drama queen.
Let's just hope he figures out what's cool, and what's stupid.
Try and get across just how much stupid can hurt, damage beyond repair, and other assorted nastiness.

What I've done in the past.
When someone I'm riding with starts acting up, I tell them I'll not ride with them as long as they're acting up, and I ride away.

Trust me I've seen enough of my friends get hurt right in front of me that weren't doing anything squidly.
I've also seen terrible things happen to squids as well.
Trust me, it ain't pretty.

It's kind of like fighting.
If you know you're going to get your ass kicked, you learn how to avoid getting into fights, and the people that start them.
Do the same.
You may have to ride off from him a couple of times, but he'll come round.
If he doesn't, it won't be from your lack of trying to get him to act responsible.

There's plenty of fun to be had on a bike without endangering yourself or others.

He's into the attention. Giving him what he doesn't want, "being left for acting up", should help.

Sounds like this is the kind of guy that just has to learn things for himself. He can't be told because he won't listen. My advice: Just be his friend. If you keep ragging on him about it you may just ruin your friendship.

Is there anyone else who he loves who can talk with him, who may have lost a loved one? Can anybody help him that way to "sober up?" Sometimes people will do things for people they love, even if they wouldn't do it just for themselves.
Make it clear to him that you love him, but that you will absolutely not be there to watch him do stupid stuff, and follow through on that promise, even if it means you see him less. Few words, much action to follow through on.

You didn't know you would be learning about being a dad so soon, did you? ; )

if the ride-to-die site don't get his attention than i suggest looking for a new friend cause chances are, you'll be looking for one anyhow.

my oldest sisters husband ran into a car that pulled out in front of him while out riding with his friends in new jersey and the only thing that he was trying to do was keep up with them. oddly enough his best friend died less than a year later on his bike also.
