Everyone I know with a big thumper (i.e. XR-650) had a top end rebuild before 20k miles. Being a single, it wasn't a huge deal, but something to price in.

Really think about a Blast. Mine was an 04 and I put over 7000 miles on mine in less than a year. No issues at all. None. Just the normal oil changes and a set of tires. My commute to work was about 17 miles evenly split between surface roads going 35-45 mph and highway speeds of 65 or so. The first half of my commute was even two up as I used the bike to drop my 15 year old son off at school on the way to work. Still got low 60's for gas mileage. Great little bike and when I have two nickels to rub together, I'll get another one.

Craigslist has all kinds of <$2500 rides- I dig scanning them from time to time just to see what turns up.

+1 on a big D/S thumper- get into it as far under $2500 as you can for a clean one, then start farkling the heck out of it. I've got two good friends who are masters at this- Megan and Francois at www.dualsporttouring.com

+1 on the Blast- see Vern's wife's bike for a mutated one- unless you're over 6'.

Wish I could go fishing for a good beater bike... : )

Hey Koz, how did you like kick starting the XT when it was hot? No compression release right? I had an '88 XT600 before the XR650L, and sometimes I just had to wait till it cooled down before riding again.

Worst things about the Blast is that ugly-ass extended seat and the weird swoopy stock peg arms. Chop that off and it's a sharp-looking bike! I'd love to have one to toy with, but I blow enough $$$ on my Ss!

I put 70,000+ miles on an 80's Honda CM450e while living in SoCal which included a lot of freeway hours and lane splitting. If I recall correctly it had a 6-speed manual trans. All it ever needed was tires and chain, occasionally I'd throw a set of spark plugs or a fresh air filter on it. Enough gears to keep up with the traffic surges, brakes were marginal though. It had over 80,000 miles on it when I gave it to a relative here in Wisconsin and still ran fine.

Also look at the old GS series Suzukis from the 80's-90's.

Save the dualsport thumpers for lower mileage duty and fun detour romps.

Just my opinion based on my experience.

And with that said I'd still like to get a dualsport thumper to play around with one of these years.
