The U.S. Air Force became it's own service in 1947. Before that, it was the Army Air Corp.

The Air Force has 4 main responsibilities IMHO.
1. Air superiority. without that, bad guys bomb you, shoot down your supplies, and you can't bomb them & shoot down their supplies.

2.Support of ground troops. bombing the bad guys across the road from the U.S. soldier in the ditch getting shot at. It's a major force multiplier. Ask France.

3.Reconnaissance. knowing where the bad guys are & what they are doing is often more important than turning them into blown up bad guys.

4.Stragegic bombardment. Hitting C3 sites, bridges, military bases & formations, etc.

Many missions can be done today by remote control better & safer. I still think that a human in the loop is a "good thing" when it comes to shooting people...I saw the Terminator. I still think humans have a good place in the cockpit on the scene, as the field of view of a drone, while godlike in presentation, lack omniscience in practice.

The Navy has a like role, plus the over riding task of keeping their air bases from being sunk.

Seems like we need new medals.
