Oddly, that relates to motorcycling.

The new digicam patterns are really good, but not universal. Visit a Gander Mt. and look at some of the amazing stuff from Realtree, Browning, etc. My Brother in law hunts with a Browning shotgun in waterfowl-reedy grass camo. It's gone in a second on the ground in the cattails, but blatant ( to color vision...It's not bad in B&W, as checked with a camera ) in the woods.

Realtree Oak 3D sucks downtown too.

It's only rational to have multiple camo's for different terrain, and just as logical to try and make it as universal as possible. Both for cost, and because you may have thought you were going to spend the next week in the woods, but end up in town or a quarry.

Syrian Elite commando camo is purples. Very flashy, but might work ok in the right light & terrain......

The thing I often remind people of, is, you are invisible to non bikers.

Oh, they look after you ride by, if the pipes are loud, and may cluck at each other when they Do see you, but most of the time they don't. At All.

That's right, people can look right at you. You can be sure you got eye contact at the intersection, and they roll right in front of you. Why? Because their brains don't instantly recognize your shape as something in their experience. The image forms on the retina, but "motorcycle" never gets fed to the forebrain. It's been shown in the most common car-bike accident, the left turn in front of you thing, that those people who say "I didn't see him" don't ride, or have close relatives & friends that ride. You just aren't in their universe.

I'm not joking. For an example of the reverse of this phenom. Have you ever bought a new brand of car? Say, you've owned Fords, and get your first Toyota. Suddenly you see every Toyota on the street. Where did they all come from? Actually they were there all the time but your brain processed "car" instead of "toyota". I'm sure you see every bike, but only "hear" "Gixxer" if you or a buddy ride one.

Same with all of us. Especially the little old lady or guy in a suit in the SUV about to ream you. Your shape is too foreign. but not enough....

On the flip side, I always see LEO's track me across their field of view. A Reactor Yellow Buell is like an eye magnet.

cops always see me.... minivan moms not so much

In WWII had some very radical designes for camoflauge. The Brits put lights in the leading wing edge to maske the shape of the plane as it was coming out of the sun at you, at 300 mph you just didnt see it until it was too late.

The Navy had some crazy paint schemes to break up the shape of the hull and mask the direction of travel.

I bought my kids a maroon '99 Contour "Sport" a couple years ago, wasn't really aware of them and then like you say, they're everywhere!
