Need some opinions on this question I have. My daughter is selling magazines for her school, and I can either get Sport Rider and Motorcyclist as a combo deal or Cycle World. The combo is 2 dollars cheaper for the same length subscription. Which do you think is better? I got Cycle World this past year, just thought about trying a new mag(s).

Those are pretty much the same. I would say get the cheaper subscription. If you want a quality motorcycle magazine get Visor Down (British). More expensive, but a really good magazine.

I prefer CW to either Sport Rider or Motorcyclist.

There isn't to many choices. There is, American Rider, Motorcycle Classics, Rider, Super Street Bikes, and the ones I listed. Oh and your cruiser/Harley mags.

Thanks for your thoughts Ulynut! ...you too FB.

I have subscribed to Motorcyclist for the past couple years and like it. Have only read a handful of Cycle Worlds I purchased from the stand because of Buell articles. Got an offer for a free year of Sport Rider and some of the articles do overlap between it an Motorcyclist. Both good magazines though.

If you're interested in a fantastic motorcycle magazine outside of your daughter's fundraiser, check out Roadrunner.

Thanks for the advice! I will have to check out Roadrunner. I think I remember seeing it at the store but never looked through it.

Unfortunately no Playboy...believe me I looked. As far as ESPN, I think it might be a waste for me. The only sports I like are motorsports.

Is Roadrunner really good? It looks like just another touring mag all about orange vests, ugly bikes with bags, and extra lights.
I get CW and Motorcyclist, and I prefer CW.

My $.02:

All three are good reads, except for having WAY too many ads- those damn mini-catalogs in the middle INFURIATE me.

CW's contributors always have good columns, but Motorcyclist seems to have more column-inches to read (plus they're a little edgier), and Sport Rider does a good job with at least a couple of columns on riding technique and safety.

I've had subscriptions for all of them for years- Motorcyclist #1, toss-up for #2.

I'm still wanting a sub to The Horse. I dig their take on chops and HAWT models, plus they've got great stories. LOTS more to read in The Horse than any other mag, but no modern bikes, just chops. (I've got an old Shovel.) MC Classics is neat, but bi-monthly I think.

This year I got a free subscription to both motorcyclist and Sport Rider. Of those two, I think motorcyclist can pretty much go from the mailbox to the recycling bin. But I almost always read SR from cover to cover. Still my favorite motorcycling magazine in the US is Rider.

BIKE magazine from the UK, it's worth the price if only for the "OGRI" cartoon page.

Get Rider - best overall US motorcycle mag IMHO.

Cafe Racer is my choice these days. Danger Dave's mag is a good choice.

Cafe Racer is a lot of fun.

Between CW and Motorcyclist, It's a matter of personal taste; like Coke and Pepsi.

I am kinda thinkin' the same thing. I looked at the form again and CW is 13 bucks for a year and the combo is 20$. I don't know what I was looking at originally. I think I just might go with CW again and just check out a couple of the other mags. Thanks everyone for your thoughts...it has helped!

I've subscribed to all those mags at one time, plus a few more. I would say my fav is Motorcyclist. They seem to be a little more sporty and excitement oriented in terms of the bikes they test and how they write.

Cycle World is pretty bland in my opinion.

Rider is my favorite read. They've got Clement Salvadori (?spelling), my favorite bit. I also get CW, Sportrider, American rider and Motorcyclist pretty much copies of one another except for the editorials and regular columns, but at $21 for three years... I subscribe. A different point of view on road and gear tests is the other reason. The subscription rates are very cheap for three year renewals, so I figure why not?

Personally I prefer PB (Performance Bikes from the UK). I really like their obsession articles.

Sounds like you've made your decision, but here's my $.02:

I dropped Motorcyclist a few years ago after they changed format and got some different editors, really didn't like the attitude they were putting out. Mitch Bohem (or something like that, couldn't stand his attitude anymore).

I liked Cycle Worlds' broad perspective and general cycling coverage but let that one go due to boredom after six or seven years.

I've found Sport Rider to be a pretty good match for the info I want regarding the riding I do. If I was still teaching the MSF course I'd still have CW to stay up on the big picture, but SR is good for me now.

Kiwi Rider is the best bike mag ever because of it's mature outlook and considered opinions. So there, nayh :-P

Hmmmm, wonder why that is?

(little threadjack here, I enjoyed the review on the STT on youtube)

Straight story though, I looked at a Kiwi Rider sub once and the cost seemed prohibitive at the time. I have always enjoyed the articles that have been posted up here though.

It's about $US50 or $NZ89 for 12 editions. What the market will bear.

We run a lot of local content too - I would have thought unless you are a New Zealander or ex-pat it's a bit off topic.

I like the masthead in Motorcyclist, where they list the editor, editor at large, editor at extra large...
