simple, can i take a regular trouble light, put a 12volt bulb in it cut the end off of the cord and install alligator clips? thus yeilding a handy 12 volt boat light?

And for simplicity sake, you can even just use a 120 v light bulb, you will just get less light out (and the bulb will work until you break something, it sure won't burn out.

Figure a 1:10 ratio. So a 100 watt house light will be a 10 watt light when you run it from a battery.

A lot of those "little halogen" lights run off of 12 v as well, and get up to 35 watts or so. If you can find a housing that uses them (like the ones they glued in my buddies KDX-220 aftermarket fairing) those might be an option (but they get HOT)...
