Well, if you want disposable choose a Mosin Nagant revolver. Aside from the fact that it is actually a decent shooter, and it's historical interest (WWII gun), it would be disposable. I think I it runs $79, with holster...

Not exactly concealable, but a proven defensive round, especially in St. Petersburg in the winter, when all the lugers were frozen solid and jammed... ; )

Ah, nostalgia....

Not the sexiest, not the easiest to conceal and carry due to the 4"...but damn it means a lot knowing what it got my dad through in Korea.

And - for 60 years old, it's holding up damned well. Still at least as accurate as I am, LOL.

I own guns. I have pellet rifles (US and German), pellet pistols (German), .243 scoped Rugger rifle, .22 scoped Winchester rifle, and these three pistols (Beretta .22 Bobcat, SmithWesson stainless steel hammerless .357MAG , SmithWesson .44MAG Dirty Harry Special. I used to think I needed them, now they sit in a big gun safe. Boring really, there are better ways to deal with life. Like Yoga.

That bobcat is a neat pistol Hex. Would have made a nice pistol for the neighbor lady who was robbed and raped while her husband was off getting the next load of their belongings when they were moving in this past october. Of course the chance would be slim she could have used it but those are better odds than none.

Johnny, a serious course in hand to hand and self defense could have served her just as well, and maybe better...I'm sorry for her experience and suffering. I'm glad she is still alive. Did the law catch the perp?

I can walk down to my gun safe and pull out a gun that made it through two world wars, and hold it, and feel it, and think about it's history.

I can take that same gun, grab whichever of my kids are interested, and take them up to a nearby farm... and let them shoot a 2 liter bottle of Big K soda (purple is prettiest).

Its a great time to have fun blowing stuff up, talking about history and about what people have given so we can be free, and how important it is to avoid ever being in a situation where those guns need to be in the hands of a soldier rather then in the hand of my 9 year old (a crack shot, and just as safety conscious as I am).

I can only hope I never get over that...

Forerunner, thanks for clarifying, I understand your point now, and those are all guns you could trust to be used to save your life or another's and then sit in a evidence locker as you said.

Hex, I'll have to argue. I know too many "bad guys" and have taken yoga. When you need a gun, you need a gun, and having one will make all the difference in the world. If more people had them all the time and properly understood how and when to use them, there'd be a lot less innocent people being hurt and killed as seems to happen these days.

If I sell all my guns and all my bikes, will I still be welcome here? I am a Buell enthusiast. Good luck EBR.

My point about the Yoga, more specifically self-defense/hand-to-hand training, is that you never need to find your tool in order to protect yourself. Many here will agree that situational awareness is priority.

Hex they did catch the 3 men shortly thereafter. 2 were 19 and 1 was 17 years old. Our neighborhood is nice but the ajoining one is run down.

Having a firearm is like wearing a seatbelt in terms of need. Nice to have when you need it.

Hex I agree with your last statement, specifically situational awareness. Self defense training can help with that, and help provide some confidence to help an individual look lees like pry than they might, can't rule out random choices though.

Something can also be said about outlook too, not locking doors in bad areas could be dumb, I assume you get that.

If EVERYBODY moved to the safe neighborhoods they wouldn't be safe anymore. It's just a matter of sociology (population numbers and deviance from the norm).

I know the guns are there and I expect I would be able to use them effectively for self defense, but that isn't why I own them.

My weapon of choice is a .40 cal smith and wesson... in the hands of my local sheriff or state trooper, after I and my family have run like hell. Everything after that is a non preferred "backup plan".

We agree Hex, situational awareness is the first and most important point.

Awareness is good, gun or no. But let's be real, yoga wouldn't have helped the murdered students at UVA. If just one of them had a gun, it might have saved the day.

Neither Yoga nor awareness prevented more murders at Fort Hood. A cop with a gun did.

Well armed air marshals on the highjacked 9/11 aircraft could have changed history.

If you carry a gun. you have to have the programed reactions under deliberate control. Same with any martial art.

It is a martial art fact that any style that uses a weapon is dependent on you having the weapon. If someones a great shot, without a gun, he's as good as his other skills. Not everyone has the circumstance of training & mindset to have a broader choice of defensive options.

Also note the event of a situation like the Ft.Hood terrorist, where you are in a weapons free zone. Sucks to be you. They never have mass murders at gun clubs.....

I tell my friends never to put me on "scare the poor bastad" "reality" tv. Because My response to a chainsaw wielding maniac is probably to hit them with a table...( depends on available weapons ). ( one does a quick listing of available weapons...and this is done on the fly, each time... 1.mind 2.feet & hands 3. hard bits on own body 4. hard bits laying around 5. hard bits to bang the opponent on 6.stuff that's supposed to be a weapon 7.Antimatter ..... depends on the inventory. )

Well armed air marshals on the highjacked 9/11 aircraft could have changed history.

Maybe true, but what really did change history were a few situationally aware individuals on Flight 93. Same goes for the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber. Vigilance, threat recognition, and swift reaction. If more people practiced awareness activities like Yoga, martial arts, meditation, etc just think how much safer all of us would be.

I got jumped once, from behind, guy tried to get me in a headlock which I quickly escaped, when he turned to face me, he got a quick poke in the nose. That's all it took, and I was far away soon after.

I also want to add that my dog and cat increase my situational awareness. My dog goes most places with me. Be mindful of the critters when they are present.

Certainly no disrespect intended to those who died on flight 93, but armed air marshals on flights could have really changed the history of 9-11-01. Armed pilots would have been very effective too.

Shoe bomber and Underwear bomber? They were both successful right up to the point where their explosives failed to detonate. Nothing but dumb luck in both cases. Not that an air marshal would have been likely to change anything in either of those cases though.

The thing about guns is, I hope to God I never need it for anything other than focus, mental training, and plain ol' fun shooting targets on the farm (soda bottles are pretty cool!). But its nice to know it's there if no other solution that presents itself in a given situation.

One thing I learned as a teen on the range - the weapon NEVER gets drawn in anger unless I'm prepared to take a life; no shooting to wound. But it is a LAST RESORT.

With luck, it'll spend it's whole life in the holster (aside from the aforementioned practice days). So far, so good - for this one, and all the ones I've owned in the past : )
