How in the hell could the XR1200 be "$10,000,000 over budget"?

What was the budget for that bike? $10M + and they still saddled it with bad shocks, ugly exhaust, questionable styling and too much pork? From what I have seen, and yes I have ridden it, is the oil cooled heads are the only interesting and new (for HD) idea on the bike.

Wow. Chris Ulrich is right that the wrong bike died.

The vehicle I'm talking about had Showa piggy back shocks, 2-way adjustable.
Thought they were very nice when dialed in.

It was just a •••••• project, way overdue, who's fuzz was evaporated by the time it finally hit the market and it just doesn't sell.

Sounds like the same issue the Rocker and Rocker C had. If those bikes had come out 2 years earlier, they'd have capitalized on the "chopper craze". As it is...they're nice novelty bikes. They handle pretty neutrally for a skinny front / fat ass rear tire combo with longish rake...but still just a barhopper when it's all said and done. A nearly-$20k-barhopper.

It *is* a shame they halfassed the XR, though.

I have to agree - the current stock of touring bikes are 'pretty good'. For folks who don't push their machines and just want to cruise for hours and hours.

I, however, no longer own a Road King.

I love my Ulysses, and don't miss the FLH!

I like the XR1200. I might have bought one if I didn't buy a Buell. Which kinda makes sense, seeing how the HD dealers were not able to sell many of either. I'm not taking shots at HD dealers with that remark, I just think is is clear the core HD market is not interested in either bike. I think the core HD customer is not interested in function over form.

The funny thing is that the XR1200 really has many form over function compromises, they are just not the right ones for the HD customer.

Ya think they believe the lacking sales of the XR1200 are due to Buell being in the same show room?

I can't help it, I kinda like the XR, I'd have to have all of Matt's carbon, suspension and exhaust goodies of course.

Weight is a big deal to me, XR1200 is disqualified as too heavy (like its brothers).
Its penalty weight is 'built in', too.

Anyone seen an XB or tuber restyled toward XR-ness?

Make no mistake, I grew up in the "if it ain't a harley, it' ain't a bike" environment.

But I still believe harelys are overweight and overpriced for what they are... If harley thinks the XR is the answer to capturing the younger, performance minded rider they have missed the mark!

From the h-d website about the 09 XR; "...the bottomless pit of torque hits as hard as it did on racetracks a half century ago." harley is trying to sell nostalgia, not cutting edge technology or high performance...

I'm oblivious to the marketing, hype and pretty much what anyone else thinks about Pirates.

I judge 'em exclusively as Vehicles and gauge their suitability as Road bikes.

For that purpose they are very good. They travel at 'around' the speed limits very enjoyably and are releable and economical doing it.

Personally, cutting edge-wise, I think an R1 or GSXR is a poor choice of Road bike.

Oh sorry - I forgot to add - and the pricing here is quite attractive on the entry-level machines.

The bling things are expensive, but so are a lot of other vehicles in their category.

Personally, I agree with you on that, Dave. They're great machines, powerful, light, and all that, but they don't have the kind of comfort I want.

And I don't care about going 186 mph, either.

I thought we were talking about using XB parts on a harley or the harley XR in general??

The rolling couches (crusiers) are comfortable and reliable... Just like my Uly... it travels just fine at around the speed limit, is reliable and economical...plus it handles great and is somewhat off road capable.

Again, I LIKE harleys. But at this point, I'd be more apt to look at the Victory line if I wanted a NEW crusier.

There is a huge difference between the XR1200 and the XR1200X. Biggest one is we don't get the X with its better suspension here stateside.
