Being stopped for that is a lot of BULL... A half helmet and aviator googles cover just as much of the head and face as that goofy gladiator helmet, and no cop is going to grip about wearing those. I think this young cop just had nothing better to do at the time, and thought it would be fun to harass a biker. This type of thing happens ALL THE TIME and it's a shame...Really makes the good cops look bad. I also think it sucks the supervisor, when contacted, just started stating irrelevant statutes when questioned, to stick up for the poor behavior on the part of the cop. A good apology is in order!!! | ||

ill bet some citizen or maybe someone in the military may be able to add more to the clear and gross misbehaveyour by the biker and why they deserved a ticket. If it was really the founder of Revzilla, then the cops really did a great job busting up a successful business man who offers great stuff and crack head style closeouts on fine leather and other biker gear. So, If I understand this correctly, in Florida it's mandatory to protect your eyes but not your head & it's also illegal to cover your face? That's f****d up. So it'd be illegal to wear a full face lid with a tinted visor, but you can ride wearing shades & a bandanna as long as the bandanna is on your head & not keeping the bugs out of your teeth. Sounds almost Californian in it's stupidity. | ||

I pulled up right behind a Florida state trooper at a red light, flipped up my visor, made eye contact, and then he started motioning for me to put my visor down. WTF, It's going to be 4 or 5 minutes before we start rolling because our lights are loooong. I gave him an OK hand signal, and he kept motioning for me flip my visor down. I almost lost it. I gave him the OK again and now it's starting to look like he's getting pissed. I gave him the palms up WTF look and I see he's going for his seat belt. Just then some bonehead coming from the right caught his attention changing 3 lanes in the intersection and not to safely either, so he lit up and took off.  | ||

Had a buddy show up for a SCA fighting event on his Yamaha. A buddy had his armor, and brought it to the event so he could compete. ( we fight in 11-15th century "Knights in Armor" gear with Rattan swords & polearms, fiberglass shafted spears with padded tip .... really it's a lot of fun, and a very full contact martial art ) End of the evening, the buddy with the car is going home to a different city, so my bud straps his steel helmet on the seat behind him, puts the motorcycle lid back on & rolls home ( about 150 miles ) in full late 12th century armor. With Shoei helmet. He tells me that all he could think of, was if he fell down, he wanted the video of the sparks....and kept waiting to get pulled over. | ||

So he used an anti klan law against a biker? Funny thing the restriction on covering a face would fall flat on it's face if it was a muslim woman cyclist. | ||

This is how the law reads... 876.12 Wearing mask, hood, or other device on public way.--No person or persons over 16 years of age shall, while wearing any mask, hood, or device whereby any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed, or covered as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter upon, or be or appear upon any lane, walk, alley, street, road, highway, or other public way in this state. History.--s. 2, ch. 26542, 1951. I am sure this law was written well before the "hip days of being a biker" included wearing a funny looking mask or even, gasp, a full face helmet.... LOL Perhaps the Legislature needs to revisit this law so bikers can legally wear a full face helmet, or even a silly looking face mask for protection.... | ||

Where were the mass arrests on halloween? LOL All the chaperones who dressed up with their kids and then dangerously walked the streets in disguise. That old law isn't enforceable. ACLU would have a field day if they chose. In and of itself the act of wearing a "mask" threatens no one. Maybe they intended it to be a pile on charge after some incident to go along with robbery, assault and battery etc. Complete misapplication in this case. | ||

I read the gist of the statute as applying to pedestrians not vehicle operators. I also believe it would be easy to argue that a DOT-approved (for safety) motorcycle helmet would not fall under the definition of "mask, hood, or other device". If applied to motorcyclists, in this case I would tend to agree that his gladiator thing would fall under the definition of "device". Now, if a pedestrian were to "enter upon, or be or appear upon any lane, walk, alley, street, road, highway, or other public way in this state" wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet, I would not think twice about an LEO stopping them for questioning. Who wouldn't? | ||

As a side note, in France at the moment they're in the process of passing a law against the wearing of the burka in public places, no penalty just a refusal of service. For example if a woman wearing the full burka gets on a bus, the bus doesn't go until either she uncovers or gets off. Same principle for Government offices etc etc. | ||

Looks like the story is real(i think..lol) but this wasn't the founder of RevZilla I follow RevZilla on facebook and the title of this thread is the title of the story they posted on Facebook. Well, someone in there PR department found this thread and they had a good laugh about it. Mr. Grumpy, well 'bout any state without a helmet law. I used to think the same way until I saw someone riding without eye protection. He was squinting so hard his eyes were almost completely shut and water just streaming down his face his eyes were watering so bad. I had my children in the car at the time and I thought what a douchecanoe, if he ride sans a helmet and wrecks it's his head, but riding the equivalent of just plain shutting your eyes is stupid for all involved. |
