When I said "their" I meant from the point of view if the person calling themselves the "freethinker", regardless of which side of the issue they are on. The problem is, in the case of an issue like this, one side will never completely convince the other that it is right. Each side will always and forever disagree with the other. Hence: Democracy vs. Fascist Democracy vs. Communist Religion vs. Atheism Israel vs. Palestine Christian vs. Jew Jew vs. Muslim Muslim vs. Christian And so on and so forth, etc, etc. Forevermore. |

Is it just me or do you ever notice that the ivory towered elitist types like to quote all manner of philosophers except for one, by far the most famous, most widely read of them all? Too common for them apparently? They don't want to be seen as blending with the NASCAR crowd? What is your favorite parable or teaching from the pre-crucifixion life of Jesus of Nazareth as documented in the New Testament? Frankly I can't pick one. They are all amazing. The story of Zacchaeus is up there though, pun intended. |

I have to agree with you Blake, the parables of Jesus are amazing. Can't really say that it is my far and away favorite, but I really enjoy reading John 8:1-11. |

Matthew 13:10-13 Why did Jesus speak in parables? And is a parable heard by a pagan the same as: a nod is as good as a wink to a blind man? Matthew 22:1-14 God calls all, but to be chosen we must respond, using the power He gives us. |

Well, or the other... If I had to really choose, I'd be a Pantheist, all is god, and all paths lead to god. But I don't believe in God or god. They are Humanities creation. |

Which is why I said: And so on and so forth, etc, etc. Forevermore. It wasn't meant to be a complete list. Just some examples. |

"... ivory towered elitist types like to quote all manner of philosophers except for one, by far the most famous, most widely read of them ..." Celebrity is not a good measure of value. Still true today, in America. |

"But I don't believe in God or god. They are Humanities creation." That contradicts what you stated earlier, that "I haven't yet made my decision" and the idea that you are on a quest for truth. Which is it? Jesus = elitist? If he was who he claimed, then, D'UH! According to you he was just a liar and a fraud. Yet you claim to respect his teachings. Are you familiar with Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan and its hard-hitting context? Which of his teachings or parables is your favorite? |

"I have none. I dislike them all equally." I understand. Probably the most distasteful to you is the account of Jesus' experience fasting in the desert after being baptized in the Jordan River by his cousin, John. Are you familiar with that? (Message edited by blake on January 31, 2010) |

Eric, Are you still a Wiccan as you claimed less than a year ago? Is that still true or has your "quest" compelled you to move on? Recall?...

Yes, admin, like most things in life, I have changed. I am studying enlightenment now, not to discount the above dogma, it was a start, and is still held dear to my heart. I'm glad to see you remembered me. Must have made quite an impression. As you have I in my life. Thank you. BTW I was cruel in my choice of words in my last post. I used the word dislike, but really first typed distrust. Sorry to offend. |

Whenever you find a man who says he does not believe in a real Right and Wrong, you will find the same man going back on this a moment later. He may break his promise to you, but if you try breaking one to him he will be complaining 'It's not fair' before you can say Jack Robinson. A nation may say treaties don't matter; but then, next minute, they spoil their case by saying that the particular treaty they want to break was an unfair one. But if treaties do not matter, and if there is no such thing as Right and Wrong-in other words, if there is no Law of Nature-what is the difference between a fair treaty and an unfair one? Have they not let the cat out of the bag and shown that, whatever they say, they really know the Law of Nature just like anyone else? It seems, then, we are forced to believe in a real Right and Wrong. People may be sometimes mistaken about them, just as people sometimes get their sums wrong; but they are not a matter of mere taste and opinion any more than the multiplication table. C.S. Lewis- Mere Christianity |

Seeking enlightenment while distrusting all of Jesus Christ's teachings as documented in the New Testament? That's very difficult to reconcile. (Message edited by blake on January 31, 2010) |

Seeking enlightenment, vis a vis Eastern Metaphysics, costs a lot of time and, in some cases, money. Folk are obviously willing to exchange their soul for said enlightenment, that "feeling" or "special knowledge," manifested by a lie that divinity is ours in exchange for an act like stapling a crystal to your forehead, worshiping trees, saying God is a woman, or any number of demented acts that pretty much guarantee them box seats on the lake of fire for eternity. I pray for the salvation of those tempted by ideas and trickery shopped by gurus, white witches, Bagwan Get Wan Free, yadda, yadda, on down the line of history to include the Egyptian schools of magic operating in the time of Christ. See Simon Magus, et al. Same two part harmony with a carousel and a drum solo shopped by juju men, witch doctors, shamans, medicine men, yadda, yadda. |

So the stories of Jesus miracles are fake and the teachings of the Dalai Lama and the influence of trees and rocks are magical? I think I'm gonna need the Cliff's Notes to keep up with this. |

I will become a Buddha. I will meditate, play the Tabla, and practice Yoga (my second session just today, and I've never felt better, AWAKE and FREE!) Never said rocks bring magic, but I may become a rock for a while, a rock with eyes, ears, nose, feeling, taste, and complete awareness of the universe and then some. When I have achieved my enlightenment, maybe not in this lifetime, don't worry I won't come back to teach you, or preach you, there is enough information for each and everyone of you to do that for yourselves. I'm on my way, good luck finding your ways, I'm finding mine. Love, Hex |

Acts 8:9-25 is the story of Simon the Sorcerer and his desire to purchase the gift of the Holy Spirit given to the apostles. None of the miracles performed by Jesus were fake. I'm still awaiting someone pointing out to me any falsehood in the Scriptures. |

Hex- Best wishes on your quest/journey! Although one might not agree with your current chosen the path, the direction appears to be toward good not evil. I respect a true seeker, I respect a seeker that honestly changes their path, as you seem to have done. Life is a journey that can, and for most people, change direction more than once! I say God Bless and best wishes! ...and oh yeah Keep the rubber side down |

Has anyone's mind been changed? I don't think my mind has been changed, just focused. Beginning Yoga was a new start for me yesterday, but I had plenty of interest in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism over the last 20 years. I really started this thread for people to enjoy and discuss all religions and no-religions. We have had so many political threads over the last three years, but none religious that I can remember. Mr. Bastard got me started last year when I started the 'for all you haters out there' thread about gay marriage. It went south to the backfire board quickly. I found it interesting that he and others said that marriage is a religious rite between man and woman only, and I proceeded to show how Paganism (got some experience it that study as well, as having been to same-sex weddings that were pagan based.) Mr. Bastard discounted my example of a religiously acceptable same sex marriage by saying that Paganism was a man made religion. Well guess what we now agree on, that all 'organized' religion are in fact man made. I really do have tons of interest in this subject. I have experienced some marvelously unexplainable things in my life, unfortunately they were all under the influence of different psychotropic substances, so no proof. Berkeley hippy here. I knew that this thread would bring out some hate based faith opinions veiled in excuses not to love all. So, thanks for stoppin' in Reg, put up anything religious here, and we'll try to respectfully mull it over. Biker's Forever. |
