Just spent half an hour in the shed trying to refit my uly luggage brackets.

Man it is frustrating. I just gave up.

I'm going to go down the hardware store and fix it with some threaded rod and nuts.

If you are reading, whoever designed it - please don't do it like that again. It's a right PITA.

/vent.

The rack system (and bags for that matter) for the Uly are atrocious. The rack is infuriatingly poorly fit and the person who designed the latches on the original bags should be taken out and beaten unconscious with a rubber hose.

All from Germany, because if you source brackets and bags from the same place and there should be no fit problems, right?

went and picked up one of the large tourpacks and i literally had to beat it on with a piece of 2x4 before the latch would work. it was that tight. but i don't want the alternative so i'm not going to worry about it.

It was very obvious that the designer wasn't at Buell.

H&B providing racks and bags for the benefit of Buell.

Had one last go before hardware store. Gut them on.

Took 45 minutes of cussing though.

I work with Ventura a bit - different set up, but their stuff seems to just bolt on with a minimum of fuss.

Off touring tomorrow after all.

With mine the problem is that the vehicle has fallen over a few times and is no longer straight.

The were a biatch right from the get go, but now it's 5 years old it's a internet vent to fit them.

Slotted fastener holes would be a benefit so there is some tolerance.

I have fitted and un-fitted then re-fitted more than one set of the bag frames. They are a near perfect tolerance in an imperfect world. It is even difficult to have every bolt loose to its beginning threads to get them all started in. Once done though, they are a tight and proper fit.

Glad to see your vent system work DD! It seems to work for many of us.

You just go right out there in your lovely summer weather and ride, all the while knowing that a snow storm is looming on those of us in the Eastern and Central USA. We will be thinking about you!

When I first joined up with BWB back in '06 this was my first issue people here helped me with. I figured for $1000 my German cases would jump right on. Yeah right. Sidecase mounts wouldn't line up, topcase mount visibly welded crooked, never mind the lousy cases that leaked and puked the latches.

It was suggested that I get all the bolts loosely started first with everything together, which worked but then the right passenger peg hit the case. More f'ing with it 'til it fit.

Has anybody had the same troubles with the Outdoorsman/Junior setup?

I managed to get all the brackets mounted on the bike without any modifications. I just started all the bolts very loose and didn't tighten anything until they were all started. It was a bit of a struggle though.

I have to agree the latches are total garbage. My overall impression is that for what they cost I was expecting a lot better quality.

I never was able to get the left case on my Uly to stop leaking. Now I just put my bag liner inside a garbage bag when I'm packing the bike. Ghetto, yes, but stuff stays dry.

Left bags don't leak, the water pools in the latch. Open the bag, latch spills water into the bag. Tape up / over the latch (just the latch, to keep water out) one time and hose the bike off good. It'll work, I promise.

I never had any problems with my '08 Uly either. I've put the racks on and off on a regular basis, everything bolt no problems.
The only issue I had was the rear rack and box, that thing is made way too high, what happened to mass centralization?
Just my 2 cents...

mounting the brackets for the first timer was a B**CH!!! But once mounted, I haven't had any problems with the brackets or the bags either! And that included the latches!

You can find replacement parts for the Hepco & Becker bags here. They made the ones for Buell and have parts to fit.

http://www.eurotechmotorsports.com/

I got the bags and bracket for my STT from these guys.

BUT I think the bracket were only through Buell.

If you want a good set of boxes CHEAP try a set of Pelican Boxes. About 1/4 the price of a single Buell side case tougher than any true saddle bag, water and dust proof.

You can find brackets here

http://www.eurotechmotorsports.com/

or here

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/3 744/474/

The Twist Throttle stuff is well made I have it all over my KLR and the Pelican boxed as well.

nice latch fix...

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=1716291#POST1716291

I had a hell of a time when I first mounted my rack system.
The last time I had it off I went ahead and loosened the passenger peg bracket where they mount to the frame.... they went on a lot easier that way.

The amount I find in my bag sometimes seems much to large to be caused by water dumping in from the latch recess upon opening. It seems to me that the latch assembly must be slowly leaking even when closed.
