Hooray for SAAB, I guess... http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2010/01/27/2010-0 1-27_how_swede_it_is_spyker_to_buy_saab_in_400m_de al.html Now, if only it weren't too late for a VC to step forward to convince Harley to sell Buell. |

Yet GM, which bought 50% of Saab in 1990 for about $700 million and the rest later on, grew wary of selling Saab and its new designs for fear of giving a potential rival a technological edge. Seems to be the American way. |

Excellent news! "Seems to be the American way." Not so. It is the mismanagers' ignorant way. But hey, don't miss a chance to run down America. |

+1. GM was too busy with everything else going on and just ended up just neglecting Saab. |

Phooey! IMHO, they should've bought Saturn and kept an All-American brand going. |

I'd rather have Saturn than Saab too, Saturn has a larger dealer network and currently a better lineup. It probably would cost a good chunk of change more than Slob though. |

It makes more sense for Spyker to buy Saab than Saturn... They're currently using Audi supplied engines and this will allow them to have everything in house. |

Zombie SAAB. Didn't they open for Metallica in '02?

When Saturns were Saturns, they were outstanding (if utilitarian) cars. When they were rebadged opels, notsomuch... Saab was a far better car, both before and after GM "helped them". I sold my 95 SC2 to get a 2001 9-3 SE. I have fond memories of the Saturn, but wouldn't go back |

I had a '95 S1, completely bare bones except for cruise control. Didn't even have power steering. Took 3 lanes to bust a U-turn despite how short it was, and the seats felt like they were whittled out of cardboard. Only car it could beat off the line would be an automatic Toyota Yaris. However, the S1 returned a steady 38 mpg no matter how hard I ragged it, and whatever kind of paint they used on those plastic panels was a marvel of engineering. It never needed waxing... always looked brand new. My father-in-law (who worked for GM) said the dealerships had a helluva time staying afloat because their bread n' butter comes from repair and maintenance work, and those little Saturns rarely required it. ~SM |
