i've been using this set up for a while, Loop 1.5 large arbor(old) & loop adventure rod 3 to 4 wt. 9ft. i was thinking of getting a new reel. what are you guys using? any suggestions. i trout fish, nothing too big, the last one i caught was about 17". i also found a good use for those crappy buell bolt gloves, it's cold here.

I sure wish I could go fly fishing here but it's too much trouble cutting a hole in the ice! I guess I'll just have to wait until spring. |

My brother got me a sage awhile back, I don't get to flyfish at all but it's a damn nice reel and he swears by em, going steely or salmon fishing a couple of weeks out of the year... |

I really like the Hardy Featherweight. http://fly.hardyfishing.com/en-us/products/reels/c lassic-reels/lightweight-reels/ It's a simple click paw, but boy is it classy, and not too expensive for a Hardy product. Sometime in your flyfishing career, you will fish one, and know why I like 'em. I gotta go do an errand, I've more suggestions. Check my home page in my profile, I have a bit of experience in this department... BTW we don't need no stinking rods nor reels, I've caught a couple of trout hand casting just the line! So has my step son. |

I'm still (occasionally) using my grandad's old reels, along with his split cane rods. Which are all older than I am I think. I know he fished with the little 5 piece I have, in the Shat al Arab canal during WWII. BTW my favourite fly is a "Bloody Butcher" |

I'm a trout guy too. The Loop is a fine reel. Fly reels are like motorcycles. You can get them cheap or spend a whole bunch, depends on what you're going to do with them. If you can find an Aurora brand around somewhere, they offer a great bang for your fishing $.

I also really like the Lamson Waterworks Purist series: http://www.waterworks-lamson.com/purist.html Now, this one is ultra light weight, and if you dash the spool upon a rock, you can ruin it, but if your careful, it's a dream. |

You should at some point try flipping the real around, changing the drag to right hand retrieve, reline the spool--casting with right hand, switching hands when landing, and reeling with the right hand. Once you get over the awkwardness of the change, there are some advantages to the alternative position. I fish both ways but now prefer the later. |

i was kind of leaning towards a lamson. my brother has a lamson litespeed with a lamiglas rod, i've tried it and the combo works pretty good. the only thing i don't like about the lamson is the loud clicking noise when you strip off line or reel in. i'm going to keep my loop, just looking for something different to try out for a while. hex, what the dealio with your rod patient i read about a while back? looks interesting. keep the advice comming |

I'm not a fly fisherman but my very good friend is and owns a fly fishing shop specializing in tying but has just about everything in his shop. Check out his shop. www.bearsden.com My buddy's name is Scott. If you call or email him, tell him Jim Moreira (Pronounced More-era) sent ya. He does a lot of mail order. I don't think posting his business is against the rules as it isn't in competition with our sponsors. Please remove if that isn't the case. |

Rod is patented. I have no capital left. Hopefully I'm going to resume production one-at-a-time and distribute to locals next year. I hope to get a loner out to Buellinachinashop as well, maybe the loaner can make the BadWeB flyfishing circuit. I've still got 14+ years... |

It's hard to beat the Pflueger Medalist. Not fancy or expensive but it is extremely versatile and gets the job done. I taught myself to fly fish when I lived in Montana. I caught a rainbow on my first day and never got skunked in the six years I lived there. Maybe a new thread but, what's your favorite dry fly pattern? Mine is Royal Wulff. For me it works anytime, anywhere. G |

I'm not necessarily a trout fisherman, I'm more into bass, walleye, tiger muskie, carp, sturgeon. But I've found that you can never go wrong with G-Loomis gear. They are the only rods I use, they're kind of expensive but should one break which is almost impossible with Loomis rods, you send it back and they give you a brand new one. Hell, my Loomis tackle bag is 8 years old and almost looks new, despite it being sun faded. |

Excellent fly reels too. I have a couple but I like to stick with Diawa reels. Diawa knows their shit. My fantasy reel.
The lightest baitcaster available. For a whole f*cking 600$ |

cyclonedon, i fish for rainbow in the upper yakima river in washington. my family has a place right on the river, pretty much one of the best stretches on the upper. a walk out the door and fish kind of deal. year around fishing, catch and release, for the past 10 or so years. the trout are getting pretty abundant and damn huge. which is ok with me, i like to catch them rather than eat them. gregtonn, my favorite fly is the october caddis. probably because fall is my favorite time to fish. last weekend i caught one on a bead head red copper john, had to go deep because it's real cold here. let's keep the pressure on hex, maybe he'll cave in and send one of his rods on a world tour. |

I like the White Wulff that's hooked on my rod in that pic. I caught some Browns on green Humpys. Picked up some Royal Coachman and Yellow Stimulators to try this year. That G.Loomis is small arbor reel.I use a St Croix 8 foot 5# 2 piece for smaller streams and a Cabela's LST 9 foot 5# two piece for rivers. Wishing everyone good fishing for the new year. |

Ourdee, is that a vintage braided silk line on your Featherlight? I have bought many Pflueger Medalists and such just to get the antique silk line. New silk lines are over $200. Both the old and the new can be stripped of their varnish, re-varnished, and 'waxed'. Silk is definitely different than modern plastic. Much smaller line diameter for the same line weight. Makes for great fly fishing especially when paired with a fine, hand built, cane (bamboo) rod. The Pfluegers' are good reels no doubt. But the old style reel seats usually don't fit the modern standard especially on the lighter 'trout' rods. YMMV Hex |
