Again, for those who think minor recalls are bad...

Aprilia has announced a recall affecting most RSV4 and RSV4 Factory models- requiring the replacement of the entire engine:

Kinda puts those Buell and BMW recalls into perspective, doesn't it?

Funny thing is, if I bought one, I wouldn't care. : )

Went through this before with a car. Inconvenient, yes. PITA, yes. But I didn't love the car any less for it.

At least they aren't leaving the customers out there for months or years waiting for the factory to fix a well-known and widespread problem. In fact, the customers never knew their engine had a potential problem. The factory is replacing engines before they exhibit any problems, based on VIN#s. They are also air-freighting replacement motors around the world so they can get the bikes fixed rapidly.

Yep sounds like they are doing the right thing. Unlike a certain Japanese maker that built a 650cc dirtbike for 20 years with a major flaw and never fixed it.

Haha, my RSV4 absolutely couldn't be better. I bought the tomato when they first released them over here, then fiddled about with the thing so it's race able. I check it every day, even though nothing is going to break while it's garaged. Many many pounds went into it, so In my mind I'm just keeping on eye on my investment, other's think I'm bonkers.

Either way, I'm keeping this on top of my priority list. Knowing my luck, the f*cking engine'll blow; and that's not normally a good thing. So until they specify what exactly is being recalled, it isn't going anywhere.

Like I said before...

It's amazing how people will accept this engine issue, and the rod issue with the press release bikes as just a minor thing, but when Buell had a mapping issue they were the biggest pieces of crap in the world.

Shit happens.

I . . blame time and age . . am much more tuned into the way a manufacturer handles a recall.

Aprilia makes an excellent product and I suspect this has it's root in a supplier QA/QC glitch.

Motor change should be an easy and much cheaper fix than many may think.

They'll do fine.

This gives an idea of how well RSV4's are selling in the US:

Engine Availability: The initial shipment of 100 replacement engines is packaged and in the process of being air freighted to the US. We expect the shipment to arrive into Aprilia USA inventory by the end of next week. The initial shipment will be enough to update all RSV4s currently with your customers as well as expected retail sales for at least the next 4 weeks.
Additional shipments will follow promptly, and we anticipate these will provide a sufficient stock of engines to ensure that retail sales of RSV4s currently in dealer inventory will not be impacted.

This gives an idea of how well RSV4's are selling in the US:

They've been available for sale in the US since early November 2009 - that's a little over 2 months of US sales in the winter. No one is getting a discount - full MSRP is the only price folks are getting, and they're paying it in this very weak economy. There are very few Aprilia dealers in the US who are signed up, bought the spare parts package and special tools, and have sent their mechanic to be trained to work on the RSV4. If the dealers don't sign up for the whole enchilada, they can't order an RSV4. They don't want dealers selling the bike who can't support it with good service. There are three Ape dealers in the Chicago area. Two for sure can't sell an RSV4. I don't know about the other one. I've got an Ape dealer 20 minutes from my house, but he can't sell an RSV4.}

Interesting. Went to my local Aprilia dealer a couple of weeks ago and they had a Factory, 2 black, and 2 white RSV4's.

Beautiful in person and didn't sound half bad for a stock can.
