It happens more than you think in the electronics world. The Silverstone power supply in my computer blew, it was $300 when I bought it a few years back, I just picked up a no name version of it for $50. Same exact case and internals, same labels on the connectors, same specs and load ratings, only difference was the box and brand sticker.

Some years ago Radio Shack (brand)microphones had the same internals as a high priced Shure microphone. It amazes me how much of this goes on!

It's called market segmentation.

The same things happens with crackers, soft drinks, pasta, etc.

My Acura has Honda parts all over it.

More than likely both units are built on the same line in a chinese factory.

Speaking of Radio Shack....I have a set of headphones I bought years ago...they were cheap...like 20 bucks...they were rebranded Sennhauser that retailed under the Sennhauser label for in the neighborhood of 150 bux...still have'em they still rock.

Both of those scenarios would be fine if they applied here, but what makes this one funny is the fact that Lexicon pretended they were going to manufacture a new state of the art BD player which would be the first to get THX certification ( Snake oil) , then got a oem license from Oppo or their parent company ( Still fine and good) to use their product as the foundation for their new uber-machine and then basically hammered the WHOLE DAMN THING into a shiny box they made complete with afterthought vent cutouts on the bottom so the Oppo didn't fry with 2 jackets on and slap a badge and a $3000.00 premium on it. Bad enough, but somehow this unit PASSED THX certification where the Oppo supposedly would not ( By Oppo's own statements)!!! I could go on about this for hours but I have to go out and buy some Monster HDMI cables because the 0's and1's are not making it too my plasma in the right order!

Yes, if you're not a little blown away by this, you didn't read the article very well.

They put the Oppo CHASSIS AND ALL inside a new chassis and tacked 3K onto the price tag.

I used to work security at the Dixie Cup plant in Lex. Ky. A walk through the warehouse showed probably eight to ten different brand boxes and they all came off the same line.

They may not have even licensed the original device, they may simply buy it at retail and stuff it in the new chassis. That way if they find something better, they can use the better devices and never have to change anything.

it could have also been a rush to retail and the real product was not ready, I've seen that one before too which seems a lot like bait and switch if it was the case here.

They did it so that they can sell complete high-end home systems to people that have too much money. They didn't make a decent player, so they licensed one from OPPO. I'm not saying they did anything illegal. But to resell someone else's product with that kind of markup is outrageous. They're duping their customers, plain and simple.

Imagine you wanted a fleet of GM cars, and for the sports car, you wanted a Corvette. The dealer was out of Corvettes, so he slapped a Corvette badge on a Geo Metro and handed you the keys. Would you be pissed?

Possible, but sounds like too much work and expense even for a ripoff operation.
