If you're an Ipod person, I'd go with Itunes. Obviously. If not, then I'd try Napster, I don't know if Limewire is still around or not. A long time ago I used to use Bearshare. I'm just weary about downloading tunes from those kind of sites, at least with Itunes it's simple and safe. | ||

Limewire is still around, but Frostwire is the better version. As with any music download site, you have to be smart about it. If anything about the file (name, extension, etc.) looks odd or questionable, skip it. With that in mind, I know someone who's had great luck with frostwire, filling a 15 gb mp3 player. Just be prepared to deal with some volume inconsistencies and the occasional bad song. If you're going to be picky about the quality, just go to itunes and pay for a perfect CD quality version. | ||

If you are going to pirate, make sure you have a good antivirus and scan everything after it downloads. I second using Amazon, but due to my lack of taste in music I haven't bought any in over 15 years. XM radio does it for me for the 1 hour a year I do listen to music. | ||

If using Limewire you MUST have antivirus running, I use Avast & Spybot, working ok so far. Remember if you already have a copy of the music in question, like on vinyl or cassette, you've already paid the rights on the music so the download isn't illegal. (different countries different rules, check first blablabla) | ||

I like using grooveshark.com I can stream anything i want to listen to for free, so far im liking it a lot better than pandora. | ||

I use a Russian mp3 site that is a pay site but much much cheaper than amazon and itunes. they are like $0.10 a song or something like that they are called mp3va.com but there is others. Apparently the Russian laws on digital stuff makes it so that you do not have to pay such a large amount for songs and such. There are however certian artist that i like alot that i will actually buy from amazon, itunes, buy the cd. | ||

I thought iTunes was all DRM free now. Yes it is. But they still practice and benefit from device lock-in through the use of their own file format - AAC as opposed to MP3. Many, but not all, MP3 players can also play AAC files. At any rate, iTunes songs are no longer DRM'd, and you are free to convert them to MP3 files, even from within the iTunes program. | ||

I have given up and bought an actual iPod (after they got rid of their DRM). I wanted a harddrive based player that can carry all my stuff so I don't have to decide in advance what I wan to listen to. It's hard to be the iPod in this regard. So, other safe sites... Amazon - MP3's all day and all night. eMusic - Though they are angering and losing customers as of late. Just not the cool place it used to be. It is also subscription based (monthly download credits that to not rollover). AMIE Street - Picking up the slack, and the customers of eMusic. Jamendo - Legit free music, though I have no personal experience there yet. 7 Digital - MP3 music sales. TheSixtyOne - Music discovery site. Sorta like online radio, popularity based playlisting. Occasional freebies. Pandora - Music discovery site. Online radio. No downloads, but unique discovery system. | ||

iTunes just because of the iPod and iPhone sitting here. Also have the ringtone thing down pat. No more buying them. EMusic for the indy stuff. The catalog is getting bigger and bigger also. My unused credits roll over every month. Then again I have a plan that is no longer offered. | ||

i "heard" that using piratebay.com or isohunt.com to download full albums or movies (including HD movies) is the way to go. You'll need some software (utorrent.com) to download the torrent files From what I've heard, it's legal to download free music, as long as you're not the one sharing it..any confirmation on that? | ||

my vote is get a big flash drive, and just go to all your friends houses, and steal their music onto your flash drive, and then load it on your computer! | ||

I happened to have a pile of CD's that I somehow collected over the years since cassettes went away. There is no way I would invest that kind of money in them at one time. As a hint to what I listen to, I haven't bought a CD in probably ten years. I just downloaded my favorite songs from each CD in a music file then uploaded to the MP3. It did take a while though. So far I have about 175 songs on there. I'm very happy with it. | ||

Brad, the problem is, most, if not all ISPs don't offer Usenet service any longer. I use 2 services. One for text based groups that I've belonged to for over 15 years, and one for Binaries. A Binary usenet server, Hellanzb, and binsearch.info are your friend | ||
