I ran my 94 Nissan 4x4 winter beater to get tested today and it failed the NOx part of the program. I've done a little reading on NOx, and it looks like a high combustion temp causes this.

I'm thinking running a high octane gas should bring it down.

Any other tips/tricks? I've heard about the CRC emission test formula additive, but don't know much about it.

Clean out the EGR, and make sure the timing is set correctly.

I thought Ohio did away with emissions testing?

No, we just don't have to pay for it any more. Emissions testing is now funded by the money the state got from the tobacco settlements.

Back off on the timing a little.
Hot combustion = Nitrogen being involved.
You can put it back after you get your badge of merit.

Time to invest in a service manual for this thing.

Hi test gas may stop ping, so maybe ( only maybe ) it will lower your NOxides, by lowering combustion pressure... but timing is a more likely fix. Clean the EGR & make sure the check engine light works right.

If someone talks you into trying pouring water into your motor... just use a spray bottle & be mellow. Good thing few cars have downdraft systems anymore. It was funny to watch guys pour a pint of water into a carb on the old cars to "loosen the carbon" with the steam.... there's a reason modern cars don't have water injection like WW2 airplanes.
