Hey all, My 14 year old son & I are doing an "epic" ride after HC. Tentative Route is west to MN,South along the Miss. river thru Iowa, Missouri, into Ark. then east thru Miss.,Al., to Ga., north to Tenn. & NC for a few days in the Smokies, then NE up the BRP & other roads back to central Pa. Looking for tips (must see, must do roads, etc.) possible local tour guides and crash pads along the route. Any help will be appreciated! Jon

The Wisconsin and Illinois side of the Mississippi is more scenic than the Iowa side except for a few places. There is a ferry that crosses at Milville, just North of Dubuque, that would be worthwhile.

Hey Jon, you can ride back to Minnesota with Andy and me, we'll just keep heading up the highway when you detour off!

North from TN on the BRP is an awesome ride. I came back to MD from Buelltoberfest that way. 200+ miles on the BRP and I think I passed - literally - five cars. It was a Monday so there weren't many leafpeepers on the road - and the scenery doesn't care what day it is : )

If you take the BRP all the way North, it turns into Skyline Drive, which ends in VA. Kim and I live less than an hour from there, so depending on your timeframe and plans, we could offer up either a spare room or some tent space for ya if you need to crash for the nite, as well as a garage and some tools/spares if needed.

DON'T get on the BRP if you're in a hurry.

DO fill the tanks before you get on, and take the next exit as soon as your low fuel light comes on. There is NOTHING close to the actual parkway, it's all down the mountain in a town somewhere.

Go ahead and download the BRAN files from Badweb, it's got a listing of all members who want to be listed, with locations and contact info. Should be able to cover most of your route. Although...watch out for that guy Vern in TN, he's a little strange ; )

More information on the Blue Ridge Pkwy
you can go to the Friends of the Blue Ridge PKwy and get all of the mile markers on where the gas is. And pack and old HOG or Brag map book in case you have a break down up there. Back in 2006 I had a friend crash up there and found out through a dealer I contacted from the old BRAG map book that no commercial vehicles are allowed up unless approved by the authorities (which takes more time) the rider crashed around 5:30 with no injury and we got off the mountain with a tow truck about 9 at night thanks to the Dealer!

I better quit posting that picture then.....he is likely to whoop my azz for doing it!

I believe many of the events will continue for a long time. It is much more a like minded community thing than a corporate brand thing. Other wise it would be dead already!

Yup, he got bit by the bug pretty hard. Like father, like son. I can't wait to see him riding wheelies around the reservoirs.

Anything south of Osage Beach, MO can be interesting as long as you plan the correct roads on that leg of your trip. There's a lot to see in the SW part of the state, on into NW AR. That is if you plan on making any stops.

Pretty good information here about riding through my part of the country : )
