Four and a half hours ago we had to take our Chihuahua Suzanna May (that was her licensed name) we just called her Susie. Starting at about 2pm she had a gran mal seizure, a gran mal is a full blown, stiffened muscles, lost control of her bladder, eyes rolling back, etc... kind of seizure.

What caused it was either a brain tumor or a blood clot, I'm suspecting the latter because she used to get these horrible headaches because whenever I would pet her head she would try to rip my arm off. She also had a heart murmor of 4 out of 6.

We saw her one last time and she tried so hard to crawl her way across the table to one of us, she tried so hard but she gathered up the last of her energy to crawl and she did it all with only her right side since her left side shut down. But then she started crying and all I did was hold her and kiss her for an hour straight until I couldn't bear her crying anymore. Ten seizures she had this night, but she just kept crying like she knew she was going to meet her Maker.

But now I hate my sorry ass for not watching her pass. The little thing was so scared, now I just f*cking hate myself for not letting me or my family be the last thing she saw before she passed instead of some f*cking vet with a needle, I'll have to live with that for the rest of my life. But we're honoring her and having a private cremation instead of getting thrown in with strays or roadkill.

I hope I'm not coming off as a sissy it's just that I needed to tell some one to get it off my chest. Poor thing was 17 years old too. At least she is no longer suffering and is in a better place now. I will always miss her. May the Gods bless her always. I'll have a pic tomorrow it's just that I don't think I can handle to see a pic of her now.

Suzanna May, 1993-2010

sorry for the loss phil. it hurts just as bad when a pet passes away as when any person that's close to you does. sounds like she will be dearly missed. our lassa is going on 16 and god only knows how long she has.

I am truly sorry for your loss. I know what you are going through and it's a gut wrenching process. I lost my dear Lucille (dachshund) about 5 months ago after 17 years with her. It was the most difficult thing I have ever been through. It still gets to me when I think about her.

She doesn't fault you for not being there - don't beat your self up over it. If things are as I believe they are, you will see her again one day and she will have forgotten all about it -

Sometimes losing a pet is harder than losing a person. With a pet, they're all good times - no fights, misunderstandings or bad feelings, ever. Can't say that with people, even the best ones.

Phil,
Sorry for your loss. It's a difficult situation no matter which way it ends. Try not to beat yourself up too much. Focus on the love that you gave to her, the love she gave back and how that made life so special for everyone in the time you had together.

I know how you feel as we are going through a similar thing with our cat who has major heart disease (among other things) and we may have to make that trip tomorrow. Our dog is likely not far behind. I've been through it before and it's never easy.

RIP Suzanna May.

Understand completely. I have a Shi Tzu/Poodle/Pekingese mutt mix AND a Chihuahua.

My mutt is 14 years old and every once in a while I consider what it's going to be like without him.

Phil, suzie gave you and your family unconditional love to the end, what can more can you ask. I am happy you shared that moment. It proves what kind of man you are, a true craring one.

Phil,
Sorry for your loss. I went thru a very similar death when I had to put my Suzie (miniature Schnauzer) to sleep with a brain anurisim about 5 years ago. She had three seizures in the night before I could get her to the vet. I had her put down as I held her in my arms. Hardest thing I have ever gone thur in my life and it still affects me. Best to me around family and friends. Take care.

Pfft, I'm the one sitting here wiping away tears...
Sorry for your loss. Losing my first dog nearly tore my heart clear out of my chest.
Godspeed Susie.

It sucks man, I know. I lost one of my dogs a couple weeks ago to parvo. She was a stray that walked up about a year ago. My boxer got her pregnant and she had pups on Halloween. After she had the pups we treated her and all nine puppies. She must have been too far into the virus. I was holding her as she took her last breath. I miss her terribly. Hell, I'm tearing up now. It's not easy...

Has always amazed me the bond that man and dog have. It is just incredible. They are not pets to many of us, they are an extension of the family, maybe at times more so than human family members.

I feel your pain brother.

This is so hard to bear. So many of us have had pets lost to us. My retriever - Kyle had a gastric torsion (bloat) and I took him in to the 24 hour vet (2AM) and he took him right in for Xray and told me that he'd have to operate right then but that the surgery could be as much as $4000 with no guarantee.

There was NO hesitation, told him to go for it but as he was trying to raise a vein to start an IV, Kyle's heart stopped.

It's hard breaking down in front of the doc and staff - they walked out and just gave me some time with him.

It hurts.

sorry for your loss.

i know this is hard, i've had to do it twice, lost both dogs (16+yrs old) within a few months of each other, and both to the type of seizures you describe.

my sympathies to you and your family.

Don't be hard on yourself as there was a lifetime of love with Susie. That is what is important and your posting exudes that. We have gone through this several times and it rips your guts out whether you are present at the final moment or not. Susie is at peace and you have closure to move forward.

For anyone that truly loves dogs, that is the toughest thing you have to do in your lifetime is put a dog down. Several times I wasn't there when it came time to do the deed and I felt exactly the same when I didn't stay. The last few times with my German Shepherds I made sure I was there, to the point that I had the vet come to the house last time. Don't ever let a vet. tell you you can't be there.

I'll remember you and Susie in my prayers tonight. The hope is you'll find comfort in Susie's memories and as your pain fades, you'll only remember what a wonderful part of your life she was.

Sounds like heaven to me.

I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet sucks. This poem always gets me.

Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

So incredibly sorry for your loss. You should have no concern about looking weak. It shows what a strong and caring person you are. I am sure the vet was caring as the pain was relieved from your precious friend. I doubt she even felt the needle and the relief was instant. You have nothing to feel guilty about. You will feel bad, and that is natural. But just think of the supreme life she led until this day. She was fortunate to have you.

My beagle Teddy had similar issues and finally snuck out the dog door to get away from me and die when I wasn't looking. I felt awful for not being there.

My second beagle I had to put down because of lung issues -- long story -- and I was there for that. I still felt awful.

I can tell you that, having watched as my beag was put down, its a painless and peaceful process. She relaxed and slowly fell asleep.

Don't beat yourself up. The toughest guy I know, former Special Forces SOG guy in 'Nam, couldn't bear to watch his dog put down.

You're still a good doggie daddy and Susie knew it.

not a sissy at all

In fact I started a thread just like this not too many months ago. Ulywife re-titled it "she was our fur kid"

Just thinking about it and I get a little weepy.

I am so sorry for your loss, I still remember mine. I still regret not being there when Shelby passed, she died alone with nobody there for her. you were there to hold her for an hour to say goodbye.

I know if dogs could talk they would; and Susie would not only forgive you for not being there to watch but she would have understood, it would have hurt too much and it would eat at you for a long time.

I was there when my sisters beagle had to be put down for a tumor. I can confirm fist had that what the vet does isn't painful, in fact little girl (the beagle) didn't even filch from the needle, she also never saw it most vets will keep the needle from view and are very gentile and kind.

I don't know for sure that it would have helped or hurt for you to be there, but those last moments are very hard and nobody will blame you for not putting yourself yourself even more pain and guilt for the difficult decision you had to make.

“If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”
- Will Rogers (1879-1935)
