Today Google announces the new Nexus One Android. I've done some reading on it and the Nexus seems like a viable alternative to iPhone. I heard rumors of it being unlocked so it can be used by a variety of carriers.

I'm in the market for a new phone and carrier in March, we'll see what the price of this thing is gonna be.

Every phone seems like a viable alternative to the iPhone, until it gets in the market place and in the hands of the end user.

According to a verizon rep at verizon customer service yesterday, the i-phone will be released with verizon plans in four months.

I have had both, the iPhone and the new Motorola Droid. The Droid lives up to the hype. An excellent mobile device. The only place that iPhone beats the Droid is in media management. Playing musing and setting up playlists on the Droid is nearly impossible.

Mike: I think Verizon hopes this is the case, but until we hear statements from Apple, I would put much trust in something any vendor tells you.

Am I alone in thinking that $70 a month phone plans are out of line? Maybe because I don't do everything on my phone, but I can't see paying that much per month just for cell service (yes, I know you get more like unlimited data, email, etc. But realistically it isn't going to replace WIFI in my house for my laptops, so the extra money is an extra bill).

Wayne

It is crazy. I have a Palm Treo and just wasn't using it enough to justify the extra 50.00 a month for data.

IIRC Apple and AT&T had a 5 year deal, and I think this summer will be the end of the 3rd year. But if it was only a 3 year..........It's gonna be a great summer for me.

I wouldn't buy anything from Google. They are like the WalMart of the cyber world. Besides, too much political, social, environmental activism , on their part.

Every company is political! It's in there interest to be. Some simply do it openly while others do it in the cloak of secrecy. Social and environmental activism on the part of a company is a good thing as long as they walk the walk as well as talk the talk. To put it another way, would you rather the EPA dictate to companies what they need to do, which may put unfair burdens on companies, or would you rather companies police themselves and lead the charge in the environmental area? Things cut both ways and I would rather support or not support companies based on their records and stances openly.

Walmart and Google are in different leagues when it comes to walking and talking the talk.

I'm not talking about what they do within their own company. I mean when companies attempt to influence policy for ALL of us.

Ferris, ATT was basically dismantled about 30 years ago for doing that very same thing. They tried to monopolize communications. Some say they're back to their old ways now with cell, internet and land-line phone services.

I just heard a rumor that this phone is going to be a T-Mobile GSM phone and will not be able to be used on a 3-4G network.

530.00 for an unlocked phone, 180.00 with a 2 year T-Mobile contract.

I'll pass. Heck, I'm still sporting an old Motorola i530 on the Nextel network (Sprint). I'm perfectly happy with it and it works just fine for what I need it for. Don't need all the extra crap which would just cost me more.

I have three working i530s, and one extra battery. If ya need them for spares, I will send them to you for the cost of the shipping. I just changed my contract and got a new phone, so I wont use them anymore.

HTC was the vendor for the new Nexus One Android. It looks like a cool phone, the network is what concerns me.

By spring Verizon should have it according to a report on Yahoo. Question is, what sorta network is it going to run on?

I like my iPhone, and while I don't have many complaints, some of the features that are coming on the google phones are tempting. The turn by turn nav coming standard is a way cool feature, the message management on the droid is cool as well, and some of the HTC stuff looks very cool as well.

I have another year left on my iPhone contract - if they don't have something a little groundbreaking by then, I'll likely look at other options.

New features come on every next generation iPhone, always released in the summer. Next gen iPhone, verizon, 2010 could be a good year.

PS, if u have a 3g or 3gS, there are some killer gps app options. The good thing about them is they don't need a cell connection to work, just a gps signal as all the map software is stored on the phone like a normal portable gps unit.

Finally Verizon picks up the Iphone, I'm a Verizon guy but as for a phone I've got a LG Dare, one of the touch screen pieces of shit. I've gone through four of them already all due to broken screens, I just hope I won't go through four Iphones. That could get costly.

Xl1200r, I have the Navigon GPS on my iPhone, very nice, I would do it again.

You can import an address from your contacts w/o having to enter manually.

The standard drill to enter an addy is simple as well, state, town, street, number.

The GPS doesn't work in a jet though like a standard car GPS does. I like to know what town I'm flying over.

Hijack over...sorry

the Apple I-phone is a great phone but AT&T sucks for a service provider where I live. Reception is bad in Antioch and since I dropped my land line, I have to have a reliable phone service so I use Verizon. I have a Blackberry which I got for free with my plan and I get discounted pricing (25% off) from my employer so I'm happy with it. I think Apple will soon open up their I-phone to other carriers and when Verizon gets it, I'll likely change then.
