My wife is looking for a second dog and the Labradoodle (lab/standard poodle)is on the short list. If anyone has experience with these i'd love to hear it. they are supposed to be great family dogs, and low to no shedding.

thanks in advance!

The poodle component does limit shedding in any mixed breed. We had a groodle named Lucy (golden retriever poodle) next door to us for a while. Awesome dog, but not quick on the smarts. Ever seen big birds dog on Sesame Street?
Lucy was Barkley...in a nutshell! My brother has a cavadoodle (king charles spaniel poodle). It doesn't shed at all. If the hair is cut or scratched off, it takes forever to grow back though.
Labs are reknowned for being trouble-makers that chew everything, but I think they're great dogs. They are clever and loyal and affectionate. They are one of the most used dogs in obedience. They are gentle and would be great with kids.
Not sure if the mix of a lab and a poodle is a good one personally, but each of those dogs is good on its own.
(whatever you do, don't watch Marley and Me though!)
I believe a dog is a reflection of the way it is raised and treated regardless of the breed. Our lab does not chew (much). Both of our dogs are relatively obedient and affectionate, but good guard dogs too.

Friends of mine have a labradoodle - seemed like a cool enough dog. They live out of town so I only visited for a couple days. I think they something like there's is a second generation so it has more poodle and curlier hair, but I don't really know anything about them.

When I was deciding on a dog breed, everything seemed to come down to two things as far as the shedding is concerned: either they shed a TON, or they don't but you have to have them groomed. Grooming a dog seems like a bigger pain in the ass to me than dealing with some hair.

Vamps - a dog is surely reflective of how it was raised, but certain breeds just have certain characteristics that you typically can't get away from. I have a Dalmatian - no matter what I do, she's going to have a ton of energy, that's just how they are.

Labs are typically known for being the easiest breed to train, hands down. I don't know where poodles rank, but when you mix breeds you have the chance to get anything from all or none of the traits from either breed - i.e. a labradoodle could potentially act entirely like a poodle or entirely like a lab, or somewhere inbetween. You don't know until they're likely older than the 8 weeks you're going to want to bring them home at.

When I was a kid my family raised AKC registered poodles, and they are what you raise them to be they can be lovers or guardians, very smart and adaptable. But in my old age I have leaned the appreciation for the staffordshire terrier who's depth of love and devotion is unlimited, and again they are what you teach them to be. But your kids are there kids your house is there house. After 2 years of puppy the destructiveness is over and they are intelligent non-speaking people.

I have one. It is 1/2 lab 1/2 poodle, it sheds, but probably a bit less than a lab or golden. The 3/4 poodles are the ones that don't shed and they do cost more.

Our dog is great. Submissive and playful to other dogs, and kids can't do anything to make it snap. Very playful, loving, and smart, no real negatives. Will lay in the snow all day and be happy.

It chewed everyting for the first year then stopped. Now it's like a smart lab, lays around all day until you want to play or walk then she goes ballistic with excitement.

I didn't really want to deal with the complications or expense of having a dog, my wife picked this one, but I like it. I'd get another one.

we have a male, he is way cool. lovers to swim and fetch and do agility .great with kids of all ages. as with any dog he needs lots of positive attention and training. we have done lots of positive reinforcement training, that means no hitting! he is also a wonderful guard dog.

This is our rescue. She is a lab mix, not sure what she is mixed with some say pointer?

Shelly

Shawn from what I know the lab Gene always overrides the other breed. At least in looks I'm no expert but thats what I have seen. A mix is the best way to go heath wise also.

Neighbor had one. great dog! Dogs are like kids in a way. even though they come from intelligent parents, they can be dumb as dirt. I liked my neighbors so much i almost got one. Wanted something smaller and a little easier to handle. Having owned a couple of labs, the chewing is USUALLY only a puppy thing. or a cry for attention

I have 2 Golden Doodles (golden retriever/lab mix) and they are both awesome. They have got to be some of the sweetest and most well mannered loving dogs I have ever seen. I'm sure a labradoodle would be great too!!

Thanks Kustom, The goldendoodle is also on her list, but they have been hard to come by. From what i've heard they are very similar to the labra. thanks for the input.

How long is the lifespan for designer dogs as such? We have a mutt thats 50% chihuahua and 50% rat terrier and she's 20 years old. But I'm afraid she's losing teeth and walks around in circles like she's lost, she even barks at us from afar as if we're stranger. So I'll be in the market for another k9, maybe a Great Dane.

First thing is do you know the breeder??? Have you met her/him??? Do they back up the dogs hip's and any health issues??? Have the stud and bitch hips been OFA certified or HIP registered. Do your Homework on them. Don't just fall in love with a puppy picture. That easy to do. I'm not one for designer dog's. Most of the breed and has been bred by so called breeders for the money stand point and not the love of the breed to have quality pups. Also not a huge fan of AKC either because they don't register dogs without thoroughly knowing if the dog indeed came from such and such and that bitch welped them. AKC is easy to go through. Be careful on what you purchase. It could cost you lots of money and in worse case heart ache.

I'm looking for a Lab and Golden mix . . . I found these guys a couple weeks ago in a shelter in SoHo and couldn't bring myself to take one . . . I wish not I'd taken them both.

I know several labaradoodles and goldendoodles. Every one of these I've met have been terrific dogs - great temperment, no shedding.

Make sure you know where your dog is coming from. The best place to look is enthusiasts who breed their own dogs. Visit the breeder before you choose a pup.

It's the poodle part that I wouldn't want. Old man next door has a labradoodle and it's wild. It's also big enough that it drug his ass down the street a while back.

The lab/golden combination is about as trainable as you can get.

Court actually the Poodle is a very intelligent dog... one of the most to be honest. A dog that drags you down the street is a untrained animal. And not its fault. Sounds like the owner is rather.

I agree.

But I see at least 2 dozen highly trained dogs a day, they are all labs and goldens.

Ergo ..... That's what I'm looking for.

The nice thing about a whateverdoodle is that they (probably) won't shed.

As for training, I'll take a Curbstone Setter any day. For some reason, mutts seem to be smarter than the fancy dogs.

My boy is not a doodle anything (all Weimaraner) and was easily trained. I would recommend the breed to anyone. I am a little (a lot) biased, but he is a perfect dog. He just doesn't do anything he shouldn't. Never has. I take that back. He has gotten into my wife's thongs, but I can't get upset about that. She's hot.
Wait, that just sounds wrong. He chewed up my wife's thongs when she wasn't wearing them.

Sorry to get off the Labradoodle topic. I just couldn't resist the chance to post a pic. This pic was taken this summer. He will be 15 next year and is a cancer survivor for over 3 years now.

Court - Both of my dogs are what I would think anyways, VERY intelligent. They were both potty trained extremely fast, they are very obedient, and both of them listen better than just about any dog I have seen. Things like go upstairs, go inside, come, go find daddy, ect. they literally act/listen like a 3 year old. My mom used to send them down to my room by saying "Go wake Kirby!" and if my door was open they would jump on the bed and lick/paw me till I got up or scratch at the door till I let them in.

Milt - My doodles don't shed AT ALL. My mom is ALLERGIC to anything with fur, dogs, cats, ect. and she is 100% a-ok with our doodles. She can pet/play with them as much as she wants and is just fine. It was odd because they are the first dogs ever to not cause her problems.

I have many more pics at home, but none at work so for now I just pulled this off of my Facebook. My 1st puppy Bailey, in this pic I believe he is about a year old. Our second dog Rupert is a year younger but they are brothers from the same mom and dad so they look almost identical. Their attitudes however are completely their own
