Found an old photo taken of me in 1987. This is my second street motorcycle, a BSA 650 Firebird Scrambler, cafe/rat style. I still have her. I think I have one other photo to find. Any Rockers in the house, past or present? Any pix?

We are the Mods! We are the Mods! We are the Mods! While the scooters still exist, thankfully pictures are rare. (Message edited by nik on December 14, 2009) |

That's cool, I knew a lot of mods, and I even had two Lambretta's back then that I really enjoyed. These guys were my friends too, I even went on their group rides, but I road my BSA, there was no 'war' in San Francisco, just lots of beers, bikes, and babes: http://www.secretsociety.org/events.html |

I was 15 in 1987...and I don't remember seeing a lot of 1950's looking dudes. Most of the guys back then looked like girls, inspiring the song, "Dude looks like a lady". Only one of my friends had a street bike. A Suzuki SP125 dual sport. I traded him a ghetto blaster stereo for it when I was 17. I crashed it two days later and spent five days in the hospital and endured two surgeries. I could ride the snot out of my 4 wheeler though! |

The "Ace" Cafe in San Francisco was created and owned by my best friend from UCBerkeley, Adam Fisher. And yes it was modeled after the British one. My sister worked for Adam for several years, until Adam accidentally drove his Triumph Spitfire convertible over a ravine and became a vegetable. Adam road a Norton Atlas at the time, my friend Mark Merat a Norton John Player Special Replica. Paul D. was all into Vellocette, and I loved my BSA 'cause that's what my father started with in the '50s. I could go on and on... |

In '87 I had a very tasty Honda XL-350 based Cafe' Thumper with a full on stroker motor..it was fast and cantankerous...you rode it when it WANTED to be ridden, which was...usually...halfast stabs on the kicker could get you a broken bone and 3rd gear was as delicate as cut crystal...I broke a bunch of those...but when it was well it was hell...ran high 12 second 1/4 miles....sadly, there are no surviving pictures of it...and I was 33 at the time... |

In 82 I rode a buddy's 650 Trumpet. In 87 I was on a friend's CB 750. In 89 it was my 1200 souped-up Sporty. I remember being on the back of Dad's '64 Bonnie back in 66. I still love Trumpets. OK, where's my damn Geritol? Nurse, bring me my prunes. (Sorry, dried plums. Gotta be PC) |

I do not know if I was a "rocker" back in the 70"s but maybe? Pictured below is what I built and rode. HD sportster cafe, Stock BSA Hornet, and later in 1983 a Turbo 350cc Honda four I rode at Bonneville. Probably not a mod though I have never chose to ride a scooter. And yes I'm old and still riding as a rocker on my 1125R(R must be for rocker)in full leathers. Bob

Suzuki 750B with drag bars, cafe fairing, and ported heads. I wasn't so much into the hair, ( more Mod there ) but did love to run from coffee shop to Wing joint. The Ace was the Mecca I never got to. ( Duff's wing joint in Amhurst/Buffalo to Dunkin Donuts in Brighton/Rochester was a standard banzai run.} That's when I formed the set in concrete opinion then that a proper motorcycle had to do the Ton easily with a passenger, handle good enough to dodge accidents at speed, and be just comfortable enough for my young body to handle a high speed run from Buffalo to Rochester in the howling dark. Damn I was immortal back then! Looking for pictures. |

I hate to admit it now, but in '87 I was Mod, Mod, Mod! Still, can you blame me? I was a handsome lad with a full head of hair, and the girls I liked liked the Mod look, so that's how it went. |

I was 12 and besides not fitting in, my hobbies included trying to score any kind of skin pic above an underwear add. Internet, shit, seeing a picture of teets and bush was like finding the fu**ing Well of Souls back in my day. |

quote:I was a drunk in 87
I might have been 15, but my Dad had a collection of liquor and my best fried worked at a convenience store. 1987 was when I really started to get trashed every weekend. This continued until 1995 when I graduated from college. Now I hardly ever get drunk. Strange... |

Here's another from 1987 taken of me with my R75/5 by a friend who was a photo major at UCB:
After temptation from the dark side (a new '87 gsxr 1100 and AFM racing at Sears Point-Infinion) I mellowed into a fine '99 XL1200S. Photo taken by my Scottish brother-in-law in '99:
...and after 60K miles and a new Liberty Sport Sidecar for the Sporty, I was lured back to my Rocker roots and this XB12R taken by my Nephew in 2008:
Notice I'm flying the proper "Rocker" not the high-school "Shocker". If any prima donna facist ever tells you: "you don't belong on a Buell" for having sincere personal beliefs, come back an show him exactly how wrong he was... BTW I spent a good part of my childhood in Buffalo and Tonawanda NY. |
