last time my vehicle was smogged, it barely passed the NOX emission portion. this time I am filling with super thin oil to the low level indicator, and overfilling my tires. NOX is a result of high combustion temps. Any advice on a temporary fuel/blend that will burn at a lower temp? Maybe a blend of gas and something else? I would really appreciate any help. thanks

Make sure your EGR system is clean (servo motor pintle and manifold seat) and the servo motor is operating.

If you are having trouble with HC and CO values then also add 2 oz of Acetone/10 gal of fuel and run a tank full through the engine, fill up again with the same mixture ratio and have it tested.
Acetone is available at Home Depot OSH etc. for ~$16/gal.

Works for me on my 89 Astro van, with 265,000 miles, original engine and exhaust system in California.

For NOx, cleaning out your EGR system is your best bet. Also make sure the timing is set correctly. All the additive and fuel blend tricks can actually increase NOx (if alcohol based, and lots of higher octane fuel here just has extra alcohol so I would recommend getting the proper octane for your vehicle).

So tune up the engine, make sure its good and warmed up before testing, and you should pass legitimately. If you don't, then something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

A long drive on the freeway @ high rpm before testing worked for my '90 Integra.

Passed NOX by 6ppm; the smog said: "a pass is a pass."

Just ask Al Gore what he burns in his private jet.Top your tank with whatever he uses to get to Copenhagen and you should be good to go!

I my old samurai had a race use only carb and cam. It failed miserably. I ran the tank to near empty, added 5 bottles of Heat gasline antifreeze. I also removed the alt belt to ease engine load and idled it down as low as it would go. It passed. I dont know why it worked, it was something I read on the internet so I tried it.

I cant find the EGR valve or the DPFE sensor on my 2002 ford ranger 2x4, been looking everywhere for that info. If anyone knows I'de appreciate it. Also Im not sure gas antifreeze would lower the combustion temp, anyone know? thanks to those who respond.

Heat is methanol based and I do believe that methanol runs cooler. Mabey someone can verify that.

the motor is the 2.3L inline 4, well rpm4x4 thats interesting cause i thought i read it is alcohol based. or is alcohol and methanol basically the same? I am under the impression that Eathanol which is what we have in our gas burns hotter, is that true? if so couldnt I let some of ethanol/gasoline sit for awhile and wouldnt the two seperate , then siphon off the ethanol and burn straight gasoline?

Methanol and Ethanol are both types of Alcohol. Letting your gas go bad to try to separate them will just give you bad gas.

Seriously, just fix your egr. A 2002 model year vehicle that's in good running order should have no problem passing.

My sons Honda just flunked for NOX--900 on a 700 min. Ran a can of Seafoam ,squirting into intake and another can into gas tank.Had him drive for a weekend--retest was 400 on NOX.

Not all cars have an EGR--the Honda of my son does not.It will be pretty obvious if it does. They are attached to intake manifold. Right on his smog check it was listed as NA.

thanks Crack smoker, I've been looking on a couple of forums to no avail. I'll find it tomorrow if it has one. A smog tech told me today on the phone, that the previous tech didnt shift the truck into third gear for the 25mph part of the test as evidenced by the rpm readout. And that is why my nox was reading high. We will see friday. thanks everyone

Maryland does not have yearly inspections. You get your vehicle inspected when you purchase it (new or used), and that's it. Next inspection it gets is if/when you decide to sell it.
Makes things easy around here, but it's kind of lame when it comes to clean air to breathe.

well it passed! I found one reason the last test results were so bad is because the tech left the vehicle in second gear the whole test. The latest tech shifted into 3rd for the 25mph part of the test. So if you have a stick, find a tech that will run the test in 3rd gear. Other than that I changed to 0-20 weight oil (a quart low) and overinflated my drive tires. Thanks for all the help bros
