My sister has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is having a bilateral (double) mastectomy this Monday, so I am flying out Sunday to be with her. I have known several friends that have had breast cancer, which really raised my awareness of this disease. That awareness has led me to contribute to numerous breast cancer fundraisers. Still, I never expected it to hit a family member. My sister is only 40 and we don't have a history of breast cancer in our family. It just goes to show that breast cancer shows no favorites. It can strike anyone at any age. The largest risk factor is age, but my sister is proof that you don't have to be old to get it.

For those of you who pray, I would really appreciate your prayers for my sister and her family. She has a husband, a teenage daughter and a preteen son. My sister's name is Deanna. I am confident she will come through this, but she has a long road ahead of her.

Thank you.
Dan

My girlfriend's close friend had the exact same operation about 18 months ago. It was a tough road, but she made it through and she is back to doing everything she did before. She says she feels better than ever. Plus, it put the important things in life into perspective for her and she is getting more enjoyment out of her kids and family. I will pray that your sister has the exact same outcome.

Good luck,

Bill

Dan, prayers definitely out to you, your sister and family members.

Being in the medical field, it's amazing to see how many women who have breast cancer and there are so many younger women getting it too.

Very true. An old friend of mine got it when HE was in HIS 40s. He came through just fine, although it shook him up a bit. I'm sure your sister will pull through as well. I'm praying for her and you as well.

Many in my greater family have had "the cancer" of many types. So far we're bat'n about 960 on survivorship.

It's a very big deal; but it can be beat.
So have faith in the Lord and confidence in the technology... All will turn out as it's supposed to.

Dan:

We're all thinking of you and your family.

Please keep us . . . your "extended" family in mind if there is anything we can do to help while you are traveling. We have a pretty wide network.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and Deanna.

I just got back home from being with my sister. I told her a bunch of people neither one of us had ever met were praying for her. She really appreciated it. She came through the surgery fine, but the news was not all good. They found cancer in one of her lymph nodes. I am not sure of all the implications of that, but I know it is not good. Her doctor really refused to speculate on anything until the pathology report is in next week. We are trying to be patient and wait until then. I am afraid my mom is already expecting the worst. Hopefully, the cancer has not spread and all will be OK.

Thanks again to all of you.

Dan

Thoughts, best wishes and prayers her way.

New healthcare study out recommends that women not get mammograms until they are 50 unless they have a family history of it, or at high risk indicators for it.
(Its a cost containment propoganda that will be rolling out with the new healthcare bill)
I am glad they caught it early, I am glad she had the chance to attack it now rather than 10 years down the road.
