I am looking at a home to purchase in the immediate future, the vinyl (sheet goods) floor has odd purple blotches on it
the blotches appear to be IN the material
I was told that its from markings on the back that got wet, I am not that concerned as they are random, but it makes little sense,

Is there an issue that I need to be aware of.

Would this be a problem for a future floor if the material is removed?

I've installed Vinyl flooring. It doesn't make sense that something is coming through from the back. But if you are concerned with it being a problem with a new floor being installed in the future??? Not at all because to put a new vinyl floor in it would usually need a new sub floor installed anyways.

Probably correct: moisture from below.
However, some Armstrong vinyl sheet flooring had problems in '99 - '01 era due to defect: discoloration, 'clouds', would appear beneath some throw-rugs.

Spend the money and put down some tile. I was going to do the sheet route like you were and when I pulled the toilet it had been installed wrong so I had to replace a chunk of sub floor.

So I installed Hardie Backer, 4in square tiles in a running bond pattern and it looks great...

Jim: is your house on a slab, crawl space or basement? sometimes discoloration can be caused by moisture underneath the vinyl. in which case you need to find the source of the moisture and fix it. some time's installers right stuff on the back of vinyl for reference marks. if they did it in pen or marker the glue could cause it to bleed thru. if this is the case you would be able to read it. another thing that will cause purple stains in vinyl it pvc cleaner. if a plumber spilled a drop on your vinyl it will never come out. but as long as the stain is underneath the wear layer it will not transfer to the new flooring if you lay it on top.

so as long as the subfloor is solid and you only have one layer of vinyl down you have a couple of options.

1, as long as the existing vinyl is well bonded you can use an embossing floor prep to fill in the pattern on the old vinyl and lay the new right on top. you can only go 2 layers no more.

2, lay a new 1/4" sanded underlayment down on top of old vinyl then lay new vinyl down.

3, if you are on a slab you can scrape it all up down to the bare concrete then you can lay new vinyl down. but if you have to this point you might as well just put in ceramic.

if you are on a slab then option 2 will not work.

i hope this helps you out. if you ever need any advise send me a pm with your number and i will give you a call. it is a lot easier to get things sorted out over the phone verses typing it in here. by the way i have been installing flooring for 15 years.

The Blue wouldn't be PVC pluming primer would it?

Once that stuff gets on vinyl there is no fix to it.

Also you could put a laminate floor right over the vinyl. My girlfriend goes out to the big flooring stores an buys leftovers from big commercial jobs for 17 cents a square, of course she is really hot and guys just do what she says....most of the time....

Also, any leaks from a nearby dishwasher can get under the sheet good vinyl and the symptom will be purple or discoloration blotches on the surface of the vinyl. Check all nearby plumbing connections for sources of leaks. Been there done that. Moisture from underneath sheet goods eventually will show up above in addition to rotting out the plywood underneath. Once the leak is repaired it is all easily corrected with new sub-floor sheets of plywood.
