I was running up to Paris the other night, with the radio on listening to George Lang on RTL, he plays loads of good music, very few commercials.
Anyway he played a couple of songs with State names in them, & it got me thinking.

Which are your favourites.

There're the obvious ones, California Dreaming, New York State of Mind, etc etc.

My current fave is "Tennessee Jed" by Levon Helm.

Also, are there any States that don't have a tune with their name in?

"Tennessee Stud" by Tennessee Ernie Ford

"North To Alaska" by Johnny Horton

"Upper Mississippi Shakedown" by Lamont Cranston (kinda a cheat on this one, not about the state but the river)

"When Electricity Came To Arkansas" by Black Oak Arkansas

The above are all in my IPod rotation.

Want to see how many times a states name shows up in song? Pull up ALL MUSIC GUIDE and plug in a search....

I suspect not.

However, if you asked are there any states that don't have popular songs specifically written about them, I'd say possibly. Popular being the most important part.

Bob Seger's "Turn the page" mentions Omaha, Nebraska but the songs not really about Omaha, Nebraska.

Waylon Jennings preformed a song called "Omaha". The song is about missing Omaha, Nebraska. It's just that the song was never really popular.

Being a Tennessee guy, I'd have to vote for "Tennessee Waltz" but not by anyone most people have ever heard of. A lady named Holly Cole.

But NY State of Mine is awesome too.

Can't forget "New York, New York" by Sinatra.

Doing a quick search of "official" state songs.

The following do not mention the state in the title.

Colorado
Connecticut
Indiana
Kansas
North Carolina (title only has North in it)
South Carolina (title has only Carolina in it)

Well, with Johnny Cash's "I've been everywhere, man" I'd say about every state (over here, that is) has been mentioned at least once. I'd could go on for days with state mentioned songs but I'll save you the boredom and just mention my faves also.

Paradise by John Prine
Janis mentions the "Kentucky coal mines" in Me and Bobby Mcgee.
Lots of Jimmy Buffett stuff: West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown, Stars Fell on Alabama, He went to Paris.

Yeah, I'm a big Parrot Head.

I think Grumpy's thought was state names in the song title itself.

Yup, State in the title please.

Louisiana, by the Neville Brothers.

If you can find it,
"Deep in the heart of Texas" by Geraint Watkins & the Dominators. not popular, in fact pretty obscure, but one of my favourites nonetheless.

Nothing wrong with Ohio, except the snow and the rain... come back to Texas... before you lose your accent... there's a seat for you at the rodeo... besides the Mexican food sucks north of here anyway...

MN Nice by Maria Isa.

Time to recognize the top of the Mississippi. Listen, don't speak. Frogtown, Uptown, Dinkytown, Lake Street, Minneapolis, St. Paul, 612, 651. Maria covers it all!

Maybe people will help you and your friends when you got lost in Blaine.

Maria Isa rocks!

I've got to post another Maria Isa video now that I've figured out how to post YouTube videos.

Sorry Grumps but taking it a step further collectively gathering all States, the clue's in the fading chorus which ruthlessly is not even in the song title, this has to be one of the most obscure recordings of all time that deserved to be much more widely available for listening.

If you don't have Electra Glide in Blue on video or DVD, nor posses the soundtrack to the movie on vinyl (I've not seen it yet on CD) then thank you to Youtube because here is the late great Terry Kath's finest ever 8 minutes.
