What is going on down there? I spent a semester in Beaufort and been to the Outer Banks many times... hoping to go down to Wilmington to school again... the barrier islands naturally are moving... man is just sort of dumb to build on them... don't you think? | ||

Yes. There are some barrier islands that are high enough to withstand most storms, but Hatteras is not. That house on stilts is the beginning of a little town. To the north there was nothing but dunes for obvious reasons. Nothing like a classic Nor-easter to rival a hurricane. | ||

Had five inches of tidal flooding in the garage and under the house. Knew it was coming and moved bikes to higher ground. Not too bad damage wise, but all that humidity under the house and in garage sucks. Over the years you learn what to raise off the ground (water pump for well, heat pump, etc...). I'm on the mainland of the eastern shore of Maryland SteveH | ||

Most of the homes on the beach are owned by out of towners.These are the homes that are used as vacation rentals.Most people that live here do not build on the beach.I had zero damage at my house.It is the normal "hotspots" that take the abuse from these storms.The original(not including native americans) people to settle here had no choice.They were basically shipwreck victims.Of course since the Bonner Bridge & paved roads the population has exploded since 1962. | ||
