Ok boys and girls, your mission, if you choose to accept it is: Help me retrieve trouble codes from my 09 Uly. Apparently there is what is called an electrical diagnostic manual as well as the service and parts books. Well I don't have one and want to ride out to P-Burgh Saturday to check out the Cafe' Racer movie but my bike sucks. It jumps and sputters and dies and hops and dies and runs great then dies. It feels like an ignition problem as both cylinders just drop out and the only way it restarts is popping the clutch and hoping to get spark while the wheel is spinning the engine. Then all of a sudden it will ride great for a few hundred miles. I was told some time ago that by toggling the ingition switch or something like that, some light(s) on the cluster will blink a special sequence denoting the specific trouble code being sent. ???

Sounds a lot like a Head temp sensor to me.

Is the engine light coming on at all?

The engina light comes on about %10 of the time. I'm going out to the garage to put in new plugs, wires, and maybe a coil depending on what my meter says. Am I high or is there some way to retrieve codes with the ignition switch ? Even changing all the stuff I mentioned might fix it, I'll have no way of knowing as it is intermittant. It also happens when the bike is just started or hot as hell from hours in the saddle. The way it does it cold makes me think the coil is Ok. By the way, it isn't just dropping a cylinder it's dropping both, quick enough to damn near put my face into the bars and comes back on sudden enough to put the front wheel in the air.

I wish I knew I needed three books for this bike. I would have them in my garage. Now all I have are the two I don't need. I'm heading out to the garage now, I'll check in later to see if there are any more suggestions. Thanks boys.

Trace the wire bundle to the ECM and around the steering head for damage. Maybe do "wiggle tests" and see if shifting the wires makes the problem better or worse.

(and what Spidy said, and what Seka said)

the exhaust servo motor might be going bad and grinding the plastic gears inside sometimes they work sometimes they don't couldn't hurt to check as this would definatley cause your symptoms

I have a race can on the bike but the servo motor is still there, I just removed the cable.

Skinstains-I only have the 06 Uly book but if you turn to page 4-8 it tells how to retrieve and diagnose codes.

You have to jumper terminals 1 and 2 in the connector under the seat on the left side, thats the light green with red stripe and the black wire then turn the key on.

Aparently you need to buy the "Electrical Diagnostics Manual" for the 09's.

Check and make sure the wire bundle that runs around the negative end of the battery is not chafed..could be intermittently shorting...

Skinstains, this is how you get the codes
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/64701.html

I am 90% sure that it is still the same on the 09's. I know the 09's have more available trouble codes than what is listed there.

Thanks fella's assuming that the 09's are the same as the one I got the list for, wich I don't what that one was either. At any rate I'm confident that my diagnosis of a bad TPS is accurate. I will now try to find out how much one cost's and if I can get one tomorow. I was planning on riding out to Pittsburgh to see the Cafe' Racer screening and I'm not sure I want to do it with a bike that might strand me.
