While a group is down visiting the factory today my thoughts are turned toward December 18th.

I currently own three motorcycles:
A 2000 Buell M2, purchased new in August 1999;
A 1995 Buell S2, purchased used;
And an FLT H-D from the early 1990's.

As I type this I am aware that all of my bikes are now past the 10-year old requirement for parts and service. Sure, I know I'll be able to find needed parts in the near future, but I also know that that task of finding parts will become more difficult as time continues on. It would be the same even if H-D wasn't in the process of shutting Buell down, but that process just makes things more of a concern now.

In the past folks have referred to the Buell brand as a step-child. At the end of the day on December 18th the step-child sort of becomes an orphan. Or perhaps in more precise terms we Buell motorcycle owners become functionally orphaned as our bikes hit their 10-year marks.

Perhaps I should feel good that I don't have a newer bike because I have no real nor reasonable expectations that a requirement exists to maintain a supply of parts for my bike from the factory. Newer bike owners will have to deal more concretely with dealerships discontinuing their mandatory support of the brand called Buell. I wonder how long the parts books will remain on the parts counters.

On December 18th I don't know what my plans are. Perhaps that weekend I may wander down to E.T. just to see if they've taken down the signage from the building yet. Perhaps I'll wander past a dealership or two to see if they want to unload any Buell memorabilia, maybe a banner, maybe a neon sign I can hang up inside my garage. Maybe I'll wander past the local H-D facilities to see if anyone has done a frownie instead of a smiley burnout in front of those facilities. Or perhaps I'll just go home and sit on a Buell and have a moment of silence. I don't know.

What will you do at the end of the day on December 18th?

I'm going to raise a cold one and give silent thanks to a brand (as you put it) that has given me so much joy and hope that the spirit can be rekindled someplace else.
